As a long-time fan of Chicago PD, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon hearing that ASA Chapman is returning to our screens! With her complex relationship with Hank Voight and her knack for pushing boundaries, she’s become an integral part of the team.
Chicago PD fans will see ASA Chapman back and maybe facing her feelings over Hank Voight, to boot!
Since Season 9, fans of Chicago PD have grown accustomed to ASA Nina Chapman (played by Sara Bues). This Chicago attorney has often collaborated with the team, although she’s had numerous disagreements with leader Hank Voight. In a Season 10 episode, Chapman was momentarily suspected of corruption, but it was revealed she was concealing a romantic relationship with an informant. Hank assisted in keeping this under wraps, thus preserving Chapman’s career.
During the season finale of Season 11, Chapman launched a full-scale effort with her team to locate Hank who had been kidnapped. She leveraged every connection she had to aid in the investigation. In the opening episode of Season 12, “The After,” the search for a serial killer found Chapman (who had previously disliked Voight’s underhanded methods) presenting false information about an informant to a judge to secure a search warrant for a suspect’s residence.
It turned out that the information provided by Chapman aided the team in identifying the killer, but Hank was dismayed when he found out she fabricated the informant to obtain the warrant. During their conversation, Chapman admitted her actions were motivated by feelings for Voight, which took him by surprise.
According to TVLine, showrunner Gwen Sigan hinted that Chapman could reappear frequently in the series.
She will be back. By the time she’s back, [Voight] is going to be very happy to see her, at least as far as needing that camaraderie that they have and that friendship and that peer. He’ll be sort of longing to have that sounding board back.
That sounds good, but it also brings up the complex feelings the pair have for each other.
Are we getting more of a Voight/Chapman romance on Chicago PD?
It’s clear that Voight and Chapman will need to address their evolving dynamic, transitioning from enemies to partners. What’s intriguing is how Chapman initially disapproved of Hank’s unorthodox methods, but she appears to have adopted some of those rule-bending tendencies herself.
The confession by Chapman of her feelings for Hank was a surprise, and Sigan said it’d take him a bit to sort out how he feels about it.
I think he has no idea how he feels about her. It was a shock to him, and I think it’s churning in his mind for quite some time. These next few episodes, it’s in the background of his mind. It’s something that I think he is avoiding and then thinking about it and not knowing what to do with, but the reality is in his subconscious and it’s setting the scene for this idea of, is there more? Is his life already made up or does he have more opportunities [like] Olinsky referred to at the end of last season that there is more. So for him, it’s percolating in his head.
Currently, romance might seem distant for Voight given his intense dedication to his job. His past relationships haven’t been the most successful due to his commitment to law enforcement taking precedence, and many people are aware of the burdens he carries. This makes it highly improbable that he would be receptive to romantic entanglements at this time.
Additionally, it’s important to note that an ASA (Assistant State Attorney) engaging with a police officer could potentially create a conflict of interest due to blurred boundaries. This situation can be exploited by defense attorneys and may pose risks for future work. Moreover, such interaction might lead to undue influence on both parties, hindering their ability to perform their duties effectively without bias.
As a die-hard fan, it’s great to see ol’ Chapman rejoining the Chicago PD team in some form or another. I can’t wait to see how her dynamic with Voight unfolds, given their unique connection that always keeps me on my toes!
