Verizon mass outage causes US Fios customers to lose internet access

Many residents along the US East Coast who use Verizon Fios for their internet service encountered a widespread outage during the early hours of the day. As per the DownDetector platform by Ookla, there was a significant increase in reports about this issue between midnight and 1 a.m., Eastern Standard Time.

According to the map of user-reported issues from DownDetector, an internet disruption stretched across approximately 300 miles (or 482 kilometers), impacting various states and cities along the East Coast of the U.S., ranging from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, all the way to Richmond, Virginia. The red markers in Washington, New York, and Boston suggest these regions were heavily hit by this outage.

Discontented online users vented their complaints on X (Twitter). One supporter wrote, “Forcing the Verizon Fios technician out of his house to fix my internet so I can bid goodnight to my Discord cats,” accompanied by a relevant GIF.

A fan noticed that every time there was an outage with Verizon FIOS, it occurred exactly at midnight Eastern Time. An hour after this observation, Verizon replied to the tweet, stating:

Verizon Support has reached out personally to several disgruntled users on X, addressing their complaints one-on-one. They’ve extended their help, encouraging them to send a Direct Message for more targeted assistance.

The telecom company hasn’t issued any formal response concerning the issue, as of now.

It’s important to note that this isn’t the first significant service disruption Verizon users have faced. Back in September and October, numerous Verizon customers encountered similar widespread downtimes.

Based on reports from DownDetector, it seems that other service providers such as AT&T, Xfinity, and Cox have also encountered outages, just like Verizon.
