Overwatch 2 brings back Overwatch 1 as a limited-time event

As a seasoned gamer who has been following the evolution of Overwatch since its inception, I must say I’m quite thrilled about the upcoming Overwatch: Classic event. It’s like a blast from the past, taking us back to the days when 6v6 team combat was the norm and the original roster ruled the battlefield.

Tomorrow, Activision Blizzard will introduce an intriguing move with Overwatch 2 by starting a limited-time event called “Overwatch: Classic.” This special event will reintroduce the classic 6v6 team format from the original Overwatch game, enabling players to engage in exciting matches. However, it’s important to note that this event won’t run indefinitely, but we don’t have a specific end date for now.

In a recent post on the official social media platform, Activision Blizzard unveiled the specifics of the Overwatch: Classic event set to commence on November 12, 2024. During this event, players will have an opportunity to join and experience six-versus-six team combat using the original roster of characters, complete with their initial abilities and maps from the game’s inception. This implies that newer characters such as Ana, as well as older ones like Mei and Symmetra, will be presented in their original forms – whether positively or negatively impacting gameplay.

It’s intriguing to notice that Overwatch 2 is temporarily adopting the format from Overwatch 1, which some players have found controversial or even unappealing since the transition to Overwatch 2. The switch in formats has been a point of contention among many gamers, with some expressing disappointment due to the perceived lack of significant improvements, as pointed out in our Shacknews review.

Despite the changes that have occurred since Overwatch first launched, it would be delightful to experience a taste of the six versus six format once again. Fingers crossed that Activision Blizzard considers making this a long-term feature. Keep an eye out for further information and news about Overwatch 2.
