Early Life & Education
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Frederick Moore resided predominantly in the Twin Cities throughout his life, with a brief interlude when his family relocated to San Francisco, California, during 1966 or 1967.
During his junior year of high school, Freddy’s family moved to Richfield, Minnesota, marking the third high school he attended in just three years.
Prior to their relocation, Freddy and his relative Danny Wick established a band named The Royal Cumquats. In the year 1968, Moore graduated from high school at Richfield High School, located in Minnesota.
To avoid being sent to the Vietnam War, he decided to go to the University of Minnesota and study Music Theory and Composition. He studied under famous composer Dominick Argento. Following some shows with his band An English Sky, Moore began performing under the name Skogie around 1970.
In my last year of high school, I stumbled upon an old gym t-shirt with “Skogie” scribbled on it at a thrift store. Come Physical Education class, that nickname stuck like glue, and before long, everyone was calling me Skogie.
Initially at his new school, Moore’s classmates started referring to him as Skogie, a nickname that eventually held. Over time, this moniker became the basis for the name of Moore’s well-known Minneapolis band, Skogie and the Flaming Pachucos.
Freddy Moore’s Career
Under the guidance of producer and manager David Zimmerman, Skogie debuted a single in June 1972. Later, they independently published an album in 1974. Eventually, Creem magazine acknowledged Skogie as one of the trailblazing power pop bands.
Following a nationwide journey and sessions at three studios in Minneapolis, Freddy Moore opted to relocate to Los Angeles along with his spouse and band members during the year 1976.
With some new members joining, the collective transformed and adopted the moniker “The Kats.” For their shows, Moore took on the feline persona of Freddy. During this time, he was married to his first spouse, Lucy, from 1971 until 1980.
In a remarkable change, Skogie assumed the identity of Freddy Moore and his band got recognized as The Kats, echoing the “cool cats” of the ’50s. Moore was deeply committed to his onstage character and often adopted movements reminiscent of a cat.
After Infinity Records collapsed, Pete McRae, the lead guitarist of The Kats, departed from the group. The remaining quartet then changed their name to The Nu-Kats. Not only did they sever ties with their management, but they also signed a contract with Rhino Records.
Back in 1980, the music group known as The Nu-Kats put out an EP titled “Plastic Facts,” featuring the track “It’s Not A Rumor.” This tune was penned by Demi and Freddy Moore.
After experiencing a family health issue, Moore opted to return to Los Angeles permanently and established a new band that specializes in pop music, which they named Boy.
Through Radioactive Records, they put out an EP, while Moore earned a Screen Actors Guild/AFTRA card for portraying ‘Arn’ in the 1982 3-D movie Parasite, alongside his spouse Demi. The film’s soundtrack includes tunes by Boy.
In 1983, the group known as Boy disbanded. Nevertheless, siblings Moore and Bobby carried on composing and recording fresh tunes for approximately another year. They adopted the moniker BFM (Bobbyzio and Freddy Moore) and graced a handful of industry events with their performances.
Instead of accepting multiple proposals from record firms, Moore opted to turn down every single one, preferring instead to retain control over his creative output. As a result, he decided to publish his music through his self-established label, General Records.
Personal Life
In the year 1979, at the age of 29, Freddy Moore encountered Demi Guynes, who was just 16 years old, at a club. Despite being married previously, their romantic connection developed swiftly. They decided to share a home while Demi was still underage, and they tied the knot in February only a few months later.
After Moore’s legal separation from Lucy and Guynes reaching the age of 17, Demi Guynes chose to take her stepfather’s surname, henceforth known as Demi Moore – a name she continues to use to this day.
Although Demi Moore wasn’t a popular celebrity yet, she still played a pivotal role in the “It’s Not A Rumour” music video. The song didn’t chart, but the video often appeared on MTV. This was more frequent after Demi Moore gained fame for her role on the TV series General Hospital in 1982.
In September 1984, Demi Moore started the process for a divorce from Freddy Moore, which became legally binding in 1985. At approximately the same period, Freddy Moore decided to step away from his career in the music industry.
In 1997, he reunited with some previous bandmates to form The Kat Club, which was their new musical project following a lengthy hiatus from performing. Meanwhile, in 1981, Moore crossed paths with his future spouse, Renee, and they exchanged vows in 2005.
Towards the end of 2014, he was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His book, called “It’s Not a Rumor,” was published by Rare Bird Books in September 2021. Until his death on August 25, 2022, at the age of 72, Moore lived in a care home in Los Angeles.
