Nicolas Cage Turned Down Ghost Rider Return in Deadpool & Wolverine

As a die-hard Marvel fan with a penchant for nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the missed opportunity to see Nicolas Cage return as Ghost Rider in Deadpool & Wolverine. Cage’s portrayal of this fiery antihero was iconic, and his absence leaves a noticeable gap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Actor Ryan Reynolds, known for his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, shared insights about an initial plan for Nicolas Cage’s return as Ghost Rider in the third installment’s script of the R-rated movie, which also included Ben Affleck’s appearance as Daredevil.

In 2007 and again in 2011, Nicolas Cage took on the role of the beloved Marvel outlaw known as Ghost Rider in the films Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Since then, no actor has portrayed this character on the big screen. But, Gabriel Luna has appeared in several episodes of the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., playing the vigilante version of the character.

Ryan Reynolds on Nicolas Cage’s scrapped Ghost Rider return

During a recent interview with EW, Reynolds confirmed that Cage decided to turn down their invitation for him to reprise Ghost Rider in Deadpool & Wolverine. “We did talk to Nic Cage,” he shared. “We tried to get him, but he was a no-go…. I would’ve loved him.”

Reynolds explained, “At first, Cage and Affleck were included. We drafted scenes involving them, but as events unfolded, we found ourselves scrutinizing…We’re aiming to create this movie thoughtfully, given its large budget. It’s the largest of any Deadpool films. However, restricting resources stimulates asymmetrical thinking and creativity. If you have too many resources, it often stifles creativity. So, indeed, we’re streamlining things.

As a diehard fan, I had the privilege of watching a film masterfully directed by Shawn Levy. The screenplay was brilliantly crafted by Reynolds, Levy, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. This latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production has been an absolute blockbuster, raking in over $1.3 billion globally during its cinema run, securing the second spot as the highest-grossing movie of the year. The star-studded cast features none other than Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Rob Delaney as Peter, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, Chris Evans as Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, Dafne Keen portraying X-23, and Channing Tatum stepping into the shoes of Gambit. Quite an impressive lineup, wouldn’t you agree?
