As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Heretic has certainly piqued my interest. The fact that it shuns the trendy use of AI in its creation is not only refreshing but also commendable. In an era where everything seems to be automated, it’s heartening to see a filmmaker stand firm on the importance of human touch.
Although “Heretic” is yet to hit theaters tomorrow, it’s generating considerable excitement due to its compelling storyline. Critics have given it rave reviews following early screenings, earning impressive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. The film delves into a chilling survival narrative and primarily employs practical effects rather than relying on computer-generated imagery. To differentiate itself from the growing trend of artificial intelligence in cinema, “Heretic” even incorporates a unique message in its end credits sequence.
Heretic’s end credits confirm ‘no generative AI was used’ in movie
At the end of the movie “Heretic”, as the final credits unfurl, viewers encounter a message that reads, “This film was created without any assistance from generative AI.” During a recent conversation, directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods explained their rationale for featuring this assertive disclaimer.
Lately, Woods clarified the reason behind the creative duo revealing their refusal of generative AI in the end credits of Heretic. He said, “We’re fully aware that viewers might wonder if we used AI while watching ‘Heretic’, but it doesn’t seem like it at all. However, we felt it was essential to disclose this because we believe it’s a topic that needs discussion among people.” (Paraphrased from Variety)
The versatile creator shared his concerns about overusing AI in movie production, arguing that it could cause harm in the future. In essence, he questioned the legality of an algorithm gathering vast amounts of human history and art from the internet, replicating it, and allowing others to profit from this reproduction. He expressed, “I’m uncertain as to why something like that is permissible.
The director emphasized that it’s crucial for us to discuss integrating human elements into art, commerce, and all aspects of life, as we’re nearing a point where any job on Earth could be automated instantaneously.
At the same time, Scott Beck, sharing Woods’ sentiments, commended A24 for their choice to incorporate the mentioned message into the closing credits of Heretic.
The horror-thriller flick is scheduled to hit theatres in the U.S. on November 8, 2024.
