Dune 2 Score Still Being Submitted for Oscar Nomination, Denis Villeneuve Gives Statement

As a devoted fan of the Dune franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and intrigue about the ongoing saga surrounding the Oscar consideration for Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune 2. Having grown up with the original Dune novels by Frank Herbert, I have witnessed the evolution of this epic story through various adaptations, each bringing its unique charm and interpretations.

Warner Bros. is still submitting Dune 2’s score for Academy Awards consideration.

Previously, it became known that Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for Dune 2 would not qualify for nomination in the Academy Awards due to its extensive use of pre-existing music, thus making it incompatible with the criteria for the Best Original Score award.

According to the Academy’s rule, when composing scores for sequels or franchises across various media types, it is advisable that no more than 20% of the score should consist of previously used themes or music from earlier installments within the franchise.

In spite of this, as reported by Variety, Warner Bros. has put forward Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune 2 in contention for an Oscar. They hope that his unique additions to the movie will satisfy the criteria and secure a nomination.

What did Denis Villeneuve say about Dune 2’s score?

Villeneuve expressed that the story might not be concluded just yet… He was present when Hans composed the music initially, and he put an incredible amount of effort into creating music. The second part will have a fresh score. He’s not accepting this because the score for Part Two is among the most beautiful compositions Hans has ever done, and at least he wishes to be considered for it.

Villeneuve and Zimmer have expressed that Dune: Part Two isn’t simply a follow-up to the 2021 film, but rather they see it as a continuation that brings Frank Herbert’s book to its full conclusion.

He remarked, “The narrative continues immediately following the end of the first film.” In essence, we’re still immersed in that same tale, those very characters. It would be both unwise and uncharacteristic of cinematic storytelling to introduce fresh themes for these characters. Instead, let’s expand upon the existing theme.

On Friday, 17th January 2025, we’ll find out who’s been nominated for an Oscar, and the award ceremony itself will take place on Sunday, 2nd March 2025.

Dune: Part Two, featuring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, among others, can now be streamed on Max.
