As a fan who has lived through the emotional rollercoaster that is “911: Lone Star,” I must say this latest twist with Tommy’s health diagnosis has hit me like a freight train. The show has always been about the highs and lows of life, but this feels especially raw given the characters we’ve grown to love.
911: Lone Star recently subjected one of its primary characters to a significant medical crisis, and the actress sharing her thoughts on this intense experience!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for 911: Lone Star Season 5 Episode 6
911: Lone Star’s fifth season is maintaining its momentum, as evidenced by the recent episode where Owen grapples with both saving horses from a barn blaze and addressing the remorse he feels for assisting his half-brother in ending his life instead of helping him through a terminal illness.
Previously in the show, Nancy (Brianna Baker) attempted to send group photos but instead shared an embarrassing picture of herself and Mateo that was rather suggestive. To make matters worse, this photo depicted them in an awkward situation within Owen’s office. Consequently, they rushed around trying to convince everyone to delete the images from their phones.
In this humorous side story, a twist occurred when Tommy (Gina Torres), upon viewing the picture, requested a conversation with Nancy. Instead of reacting angrily about the photo, Tommy expressed worry due to noticing something odd on Nancy’s exposed chest that appeared unusual to her. This unexpected discovery alarmed Nancy, as she had tragically lost both her mother and grandmother to cancer.
In a conversation with TVLine, Baker explained that the plot twist was designed to be unexpected, mirroring the unpredictability often found in real-life situations.
That’s what it’s like in real life. When you get shocking news or bad news, you’re just like, la dee da, then all of a sudden there’s like a hammer that comes down. I liked that there wasn’t any foreshadowing.
That feeling continued throughout the episode, which included another unexpected turn.
Who has cancer on 911: Lone Star?
Nancy and Mateo found themselves at odds over the medical diagnosis, with Nancy feeling that Mateo failed to grasp the extent of her fear. However, their bond strengthened when it was revealed that Mateo was prepared to shave his head in solidarity if Nancy were to lose her hair due to chemotherapy treatments.
Tom went with Nancy to her medical check-up, demonstrating his support by getting checked up too. After some stress, Nancy received fantastic news that the growth wasn’t cancerous, merely a cyst. She happily passed on this good tidings to Tom at the exact moment when his own doctor phoned. In an unfortunate twist of events, Tom was devastated upon learning that “the doctor detected something, and it’s serious.” The story concluded with Tom crying in shock as he hugged a startled Nancy.
According to the baker, this event is likely to affect Nancy just as deeply as it will Tommy. This fear and anxiety, stemming from the possibility of losing this person whom Nancy considers like a mother, could be overwhelming for her. Moreover, given Nancy’s past experiences, it appears she might have symptoms consistent with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when considering worst-case scenarios related to this diagnosis.
The outcome of Tommy’s diagnosis remains uncertain, as she might prefer to hide it from the team for as long as she can while performing her duties. However, eventually, she will need to disclose it, and the sight of resilient Tommy being affected by the prospect of her own mortality could profoundly affect the entire work station.
As “9-1-1: Lone Star” progresses into the latter half of its final season, viewers and audiences alike can anticipate that Tommy’s wellbeing will become a significant source of worry.
911: Lone Star airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.
