In essence, “The Substance” focuses on Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-famous actress now 50, who with the assistance of a magical serum, brings forth a more youthful and flawless persona named Sue. The film contains numerous unsettling sequences. A pivotal moment (beware of spoilers) reveals that Elisabeth’s transformation has resulted in her acquiring a hunched back and losing her hair. Scenes involving Elizabeth and Sue’s demise are equally distressing, as is the climactic scene. In this finale, a hybrid form of both Elizabeth and Sue emerges on stage, attempting to address the audience. However, upon revealing her grotesque appearance, the crowd begins to scream in terror.
