As a fervent admirer of the enigmatic Arvind Swamy, I find his journey to be nothing short of captivating and inspiring. His rise to fame was meteoric, with roles in classic films like Roja and Bombay making him an instant heartthrob. However, it was his decision to step back from the limelight that intrigued me the most.
Arvind Swamy gained widespread popularity as a leading romantic actor, with memorable roles in films such as Bombay and Roja. His handsome appearance and captivating performances resonated deeply with viewers. Yet, when fans were eagerly awaiting more of his work, the actor temporarily withdrew from acting in 2000. It wasn’t until 13 years later that he made a comeback on the big screen. In an earlier interview, he shared insights into the less-discussed period of his career.
During an interview with Hans India, Arvind Swamy shared that he had taken his first-ever audition at the tender age of 21, which landed him a role in Mani Ratnam’s film, Thalapathi. Impressed by Arvind’s work in several advertisements, the director selected him for his movie. Later on, Arvind was cast by the filmmaker in some iconic films.
Speaking about his reasons for quitting acting and moving to the United States, Arvind explained, “At just 21 years old, I was chosen by Mani Ratnam for Thalapathi after he spotted me in a few ads. This led to roles in Roja and Bombay where I played the main male character. However, the fame became too much for me at that point, so I opted to leave for the U.S.
Currently, Arvind Swamy expressed that he feels more assured than before about managing stardom, contrasting his earlier days. He added that he values privacy deeply and, being essentially private by disposition, he tends to keep a low profile.
In the course of our chat, Arvind Swamy discussed another crucial aspect of his life – his role as a father. This esteemed actor shares a daughter named Adhira and a son named Rudra with Gayathri Ramamurthy, his first wife. He disclosed that a substantial portion of his break was dedicated to spending time with his children.
He mentioned, “I have nurtured my kids all by myself. I’m happy that I invested those ten years in raising them. I’m glad that now I have more time for myself, as my daughter, who is 19, is grown up, and my son is also able to manage on his own. While bringing up my kids, I had to strike a balance between being strict and being able to maintain my cool. When dealing with kids, it’s very important to talk about every subject that interests them.”
Near the conclusion of the discussion, Arvind Swamy spoke about a challenging period in his life as well – the time in 2005 when he sustained severe spinal injuries. This trauma resulted in temporary paralysis of his lower limbs, which he grappled with for numerous years.
He expressed how luck has never been a key factor in the way his life has unfolded. He shared how severely he was injured for a long time, to the extent that he couldn’t walk for a while. Even something as basic as going to the washroom required assistance due to his limb paralysis.
On the work front, Arvind Swamy was last seen in the 2024 release Meiyazhagan, co-starring Karthi.
