The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn has 'ideas for a long time' past season 3

As a gamer with over two decades of binge-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that “The Diplomat” has become one of my favorite political thrillers to grace our screens. The way it masterfully intertwines suspense and intrigue while keeping the audience on the edge of their seats is nothing short of remarkable.

After the drop of The Diplomat season 2 on Halloween, it climbed right up to the pinnacle of the daily top 10 most-watched shows in the U.S., just as anticipated. Once again, I found myself immersed in the gripping role of Keri Russell’s Emmy Award-nominated character, Kate Wyler, U.S. ambassador, as the fallout from the car bombing unveiled fresh complexities within the deepening conspiracy.

I’m thrilled beyond words! It seems that my favorite show, “The Diplomat,” has been granted another season even before the release of season 2. Incredibly, the filming for this new season is already underway. To sweeten the deal further, the upcoming season 3 will boast eight episodes instead of six, addressing a common concern among fans who yearned for more storyline to savor. Phew! More “The Diplomat” is on its way, and I couldn’t be happier about it!

Indeed, this news is sure to heighten anticipation among fans of “The Diplomat”. Creator Debora Cahn has shared that she has not only ideas but a wealth of them for the series, extending far beyond the upcoming third season. In her words to The Hollywood Reporter, these ideas span a considerable length of time. This means that we, the viewers, can look forward to more seasons past the third one!

The Diplomat could continue beyond season 3

Nowadays in the streaming era, it’s unusual for shows to last beyond four seasons compared to how television series used to run for up to ten years not so long ago. However, you can still find series that continue to air episodes for at least six or seven seasons. But when it comes to streaming platforms, this is less common.

It’s thrilling to learn that according to Cahn, there’s no plan yet to conclude “The Diplomat” after just three or four seasons. Many shows nowadays wrap up after only 30-40 episodes, which is barely considered a full television series in comparison to the amount of content produced in the past. It seems Cahn intends for this series to continue running.

Here’s what Cahn told The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s future:

I know some of the way that the story could continue or end. There’s some of it that I don’t know. And, you know, to be completely honest, I have to say a lot of my favorite stuff was not in my plans in the very beginning. It’s great that what we see from the actors could be the inspiration for that or somebody else on the writing staff. I have ideas but I want them to be outdone, like just blown out of the water by something else that’s even better.

Despite having plans to potentially conclude the series, she also has numerous ideas to continue it for future seasons. Furthermore, as she mentioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she remains flexible about not strictly adhering to a set plan and allowing the creativity of the writer’s room to lead them to unforeseen directions. Cahn explained that the cast, particularly Allison Janney, have influenced the development of Penn’s character arc in the upcoming seasons.

Keeping a series engaging and at its best doesn’t just involve sticking to a plan; it also means being adaptable to unexpected opportunities such as new cast members and the dynamic between actors. While having a strategy is crucial, staying open to spontaneous moments can lead to fascinating twists and superior quality TV shows. And let’s face it, politics sure aren’t dull these days!
