The Fly: New Movie Set in Universe of David Cronenberg’s Horror Classic Is in the Works

As a long-time fan of the body horror genre and David Cronenberg’s masterpieces, I am beyond thrilled to hear that a new installment in the world of “The Fly” is on its way! The original 1986 film is one of my all-time favorites, with Jeff Goldblum’s unforgettable performance as Seth Brundle still haunting my nightmares.

A new movie based on David Cronenberg’s The Fly is in the works.

Under the direction and co-writing of David Cronenberg, the movie “The Fly” hit theaters in 1986. This film is a remake of the 1958 movie with the same title, which was originally directed by Kurt Neumann. The short story on which both films are based goes back to 1957 and was written by George Langelaan. In this chilling body horror tale, Jeff Goldblum plays Seth Brundle, while Geena Davis portrays Veronica “Ronnie” Quaife.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that by the deadline, 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment are pushing ahead with a new movie. This upcoming flick is going to be nestled within the very same universe as David Cronenberg’s iconic film, The Fly. Can’t wait to see how they continue the story!

What do we know about the new The Fly movie?

In a new project, the filmmaking duties are entrusted to Nikyatu Jusu, who was behind the camera for the 2022 release “Nanny,” featuring Anna Diop and Michelle Monaghan in leading roles.

The specifics of the storyline are yet to be revealed, but as reported by Deadline, this new production won’t follow a direct replication of Cronenberg’s film. Instead, it is expected to take place within the same cosmic realm.

Back in the day, I remember catching a flick titled “The Fly II,” which served as a follow-up to Cronenberg’s classic, “The Fly.” Directed by Chris Walas, this movie delved into the life of Eric Stoltz, portraying the grown-up son of Veronica and Seth’s offspring from the original story. When it dropped in 1989, it didn’t exactly win over the critics, earning some pretty harsh reviews.

In a modern retelling of the 1958 cult favorite, a young scientist undergoes a terrifying transformation into a fly during an experiment that goes disastrously awry. The plot summary for Cronenberg’s film describes Seth Brundle, a brilliant yet quirky scientist, attempting to win over skeptical investigative journalist Veronica Quaife by presenting her with exclusive access to his groundbreaking research in the field of matter transportation. Despite initial success and defying the predictions of the scientific community, Brundle believes he has solved all the problems until a fly accidentally contaminates the teleportation chamber during his attempt to transport himself. The result is that Brundle undergoes a drastic transformation.

Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are set to oversee the production of a fresh version of “The Fly” by Jusu, but as of now, no launch date has been announced. On the other hand, David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” is available for streaming on Hulu at present.
