Paddington in Peru Reviews Call Sequel a Step Down From First 2 Movies

As a gamer who’s seen his fair share of sequels, I must say that the early reviews for Paddington in Peru have me feeling a bit like the protagonist in a disappointing follow-up game – excited at the prospect but ultimately let down by the execution. The first two Paddington movies were absolute gems, filled with charm and wit that left a lasting impression.

The first reviews for Paddington in Peru are calling it a step down from the first two movies.

I’m thrilled to share that, as a die-hard fan, I can’t wait until we finally get to see Paddington on the big screen in the United States, which is scheduled for January 2024. However, if you’re living in the UK, you’ll have an early chance to enjoy the third installment of the Paddington series, hitting cinemas there on November 8, 2024, courtesy of StudioCanal UK. The film is directed by Dougal Wilson, with Paul King, who helmed the first two movies, contributing to the storyline.

Initial reactions to Paddington 3 are out, and many critics appear to believe that this latest installment doesn’t quite match up to the quality of 2014’s Paddington or 2017’s Paddington 2.

What are critics saying about Paddington in Peru?

According to Leslie Felperin from The Hollywood Reporter, although the sequel isn’t shameful and contains numerous endearing aspects and high-quality production, it seems to be missing the quirky humor and distinctly dark undertones that made the first two Paddington films so exceptional.

David Ehrlich from IndieWire commented that he “won’t be too disappointed if Dougal Wilson’s Paddington in Peru feels like a faint copy of its earlier versions, as it makes Paddington 3 seem more like Paddington 1 compared to the enhanced Paddington 2. He added that screenwriters Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont make a commendable effort in adding more flavor to the formula left by King and his team, but it can be challenging to appreciate the taste of aged marmalade in a film that aspires to highlight what truly gives it life.

Critic Guy Lodge from Variety found that the third Paddington film, set in Peru, is a more traditional children’s entertainment compared to the first two movies. This is because the latest movie presents a more structured and artificial storyline that deviates significantly from the humble, cozy essence of Michael Bond’s original books.

According to BBC’s Nicholas Barber, Paddington in Peru appears to be striving diligently to recreate the delightful enchantment that Paddington 2 seemed to create with such apparent ease.

In the United States, the movie featuring Paddington in Peru is set to hit theatres on January 17, 2025, distributed by Columbia Pictures.
