Days of Thunder 2: Tom Cruise Eying Sequel to Racing Movie

As a die-hard fan who’s watched Days of Thunder more times than I can count (and yes, that includes the infamous scene where Cole Trickle says “I just want to go fast”), hearing about a potential sequel has me revving up with excitement! If you’ve seen me drive my ’89 Camaro around the block one too many times, you know I live and breathe NASCAR.

Tom Cruise is looking to potentially make a Days of Thunder 2.

In the year 1990, the action-packed movie Days of Thunder hit the screens. This film was masterfully directed by Tony Scott and featured Tom Cruise portraying Cole Trickle, an ambitious up-and-coming race car driver striving for recognition in NASCAR.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m buzzing with excitement! According to the latest scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise himself is in discussions with Paramount about the possibility of revving up the engine for a sequel to Days of Thunder. Fingers crossed and petrol at the ready!

What do we know about the potential Days of Thunder 2 movie?

At the moment, the project hasn’t received formal approval yet; instead, it seems that Tom Cruise is just discussing the concept for now.

According to a source within the studio who’s privy to the conversations, he’s discussing both Top Gun and Days of Thunder with Paramount. The project that shapes up with a completed script first will be the one they move forward with, considering the quality of the idea and, ultimately, the script itself.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter in March 2022, there were earlier plans at Paramount to develop Days of Thunder into a TV show. However, Tom Cruise was not keen on this venture and effectively shelved the project by putting an end to it.

Amongst us, alongside Tom Cruise, the cast of Days of Thunder included acting greats like Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, the radiant Nicole Kidman, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Cary Elwes, Fred Thompson, and Caroline Williams. What a star-studded crew we had!

In the high-speed environment of NASCAR racing, a feud arises between newcomer prodigy Cole Trickle (played by Cruise) and seasoned racer Rowdy Burns (portrayed by Rooker). However, when both find themselves severely hurt during competitions, their initial animosity transforms into friendship. With Cole’s morale lifted through a romantic connection with Dr. Claire Lewicki, a neurosurgeon (Kidman), and Rowdy still recovering from his injuries, Cole chooses to race Rowdy’s car in the Daytona 500 against cunning newcomer Russ Wheeler (Elwes).

There’s some uncertainty about whether any actors from the original Days of Thunder will appear in a potential sequel, assuming the project gets approved.

Days of Thunder is currently streaming on Fubo, Paramount+, and MGM+.
