As a gamer who has grown up with the soothing voice of Bob Costas narrating countless baseball games and other sports events over the past four decades, his retirement announcement feels like the final buzzer of an epic game. The man has been the soundtrack to my sports-watching life, and it’s hard to imagine baseball without him.
Veteran sportscaster Bob Costas has announced his intention to retire, marking the end of a remarkable 40-year career as the voice for Major League Baseball play-by-play commentary. Initially reported by Andrew Marchand from The Athletic, Costas’ retirement has been in the works for over a year. His contract with TBS concluded at the close of the season, following his commentary duties on both TBS Sports and MLB Network during recent baseball seasons. Here is an update on Bob Costas’ next steps after his planned retirement at the age of 72.
Where is Bob Costas going after retiring from baseball play-by-play?
Though Bob Costas won’t be handling baseball play-by-play anymore, he isn’t planning to retire from baseball completely. Instead, he’ll carry on with his work at the MLB Network.
The last game he covered for play-by-play was for the American League Division Series between the Yankees and Royals.
According to MLB.com reports, Bob Costas will explain his decision for stepping away from baseball play-by-play during a special broadcast on Monday at 3 PM Pacific Time/6 PM Eastern Time on MLB Tonight, a unique program airing on the MLB Network. Since its inception in 2009, he has been an integral part of the network and has lent his talents to numerous shows across the channel, such as The Sounds of Baseball, MLB Now, MLB Network Showcase, Costas at the Movies, among others.
Given his diverse background in sports broadcasting, covering various events such as basketball, football, boxing, NASCAR, golf, and the Olympics, there’s a good chance that Costas might continue offering commentary for these sports in the future.
In 2018, Costas was honored for his distinguished career in broadcasting when he received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 2021, sports interviewer Bob Costas took over as host for the self-titled HBO series “Back on the Record with Bob Costas.” Each year, four episodes were aired, during which he interviewed figures from both the sports and pop culture spheres. The show ended after two seasons.
