As a devoted fan of Stephen King’s chilling tales that have kept me awake through many a sleepless night, I was thrilled to hear about his foray into animation with the release of Lily, an animated adaptation of one of his short stories. Having grown up reading King’s works and watching countless adaptations, it feels like a dream come true to witness the master of horror stepping into uncharted territory.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always admired Stephen King – the undisputed master of horror who’s dabbled in every imaginable publishing avenue out there. Known as the “King of Horror,” he’s penned countless novels, short stories and novellas, scripts for movies and TV, comic books, essays, and much more. This Halloween season, this American literary legend is unveiling his first-ever animated short film, available for free viewing!
1968 saw Stephen King’s chilling short story “Here There Be Tygers” appear in Ubris magazine, later collected in Skeleton Crew in 1985. For a spooky Halloween surprise, Dark Corners Films has transformed the tale into an animated film titled Lily. In contrast to this, Night Frizz Productions presented a female live-action adaptation of King’s short story back in 2019. This new version marks the first time “Here There Be Tygers” has been adapted as an animated horror production and Stephen King’s initial foray into animation writing.
You can watch Stephen King’s debut as an animated short writer below:
1) The third-grader character named Lily uncovers a frightening tiger concealed within the boys’ restroom. Pete Scalizitti’s hand-drawn animation for this 10-minute project is black-and-white, but it utilizes bold green and red accents to highlight its captivating themes. Kate Siegel, recognized from her roles in Mike Flanagan’s productions, not only directed the animated short but also supplied voices for all characters by narrating as well. Lily serves as a fantastic Halloween-themed animated short, delivering visually stunning scenes and lessons on empathy.
