Grotesquerie Ending Explained: Is the Series Really Over?

As a devoted fan who’s been following Grotesquerie since its premiere, I must say that the ending left me as puzzled as Lois herself! The plot twists were mind-boggling, and the cliffhanger was enough to give anyone whiplash. It’s rare to find a series that keeps you guessing until the very end, but Grotesquerie certainly delivers on that front.

The conclusion of ‘Grotesquerie’ is challenging to decipher. Some spectators thought it was a self-contained series, leading to confusion with the abrupt cliffhanger finale. The first season concluded without much clarity regarding Lois’ situation or why the Grotesquerie killings were occurring, as she recalled them from her coma. Below, we will attempt to make sense of the puzzle pieces and speculate on potential future developments.

What happens in the Grotesquerie season finale?

In the ninth episode of Grotesquerie, Lois kills Megan’s abusive boyfriend Justin, but when the series finale starts, Lois is disoriented and eventually returns home to find Marshall and Redd suggesting they live together as a threesome. Lois rejects this proposal, and later in a car ride with Marshall, Redd admits that she’s aware he’s been unfaithful with other women and no longer wishes to be with him.

Upon Marshall’s resumption of teaching in his class, matters take a turn for the worse when Megan and Gale storm in to apprehend him, due to accusations of sexual misconduct made by one of his students. He maintains that their relationship was consensual, but is taken into custody regardless, eventually being freed on bail pending further investigation.

With his career, marriage, and connections at an end, Marshall considers taking his own life but fails. Later, Redd and Merritt pay him a visit to deliver some tough realities. Upon discharge from the hospital, Marshall receives a call from Ed extending an invitation to join a men’s group. This group, consisting mainly of Lois’s male associates (including her therapists), aims to revert back to traditional values, and Marshall is welcomed with open arms when he aligns himself with their objective.

In the meantime, Lois experiences a mental collapse, convinced that she’s deceased or still in a coma. She’s hospitalized, where she confesses to Dr. Whitcomb that she murdered Justin. However, she claims all traces of his death have vanished and Megan denies any knowledge of the incident. Furthermore, Lois alleges that Charlie held orgies in her room while she was unconscious, overhearing him discuss impregnating a patient. She also shares her belief that the first Grotesquerie murder mirrors her dreams exactly, suggesting someone with access to her files might be responsible for it.

Instead, Dr. Witticomb takes a surprising turn in their conversation with Lois, implying that he suspects Cotard’s Syndrome in her, even going so far as to suggest that she could be the one causing the turmoil and hostility in her life, hinting at her being the culprit. Offended, she concludes the discussion and retreats to her room.

After a few days, Megan visits Lois in the middle of the night and asks for her help. She brings Lois to the scene of the second Grotesquerie killing. She reveals that Lois really did kill Justin and that it wasn’t all in her head before leading her in to see the crime scene.

In Charlie’s dreams, the murders have occurred exactly as they did, but the individuals targeted are different this time. Charlie has become the one who was crucified, and Mary Colsby, a girl who accused Marshall of sexual misconduct, is now one of the victims.

Lois assumes control, instructing everyone to gather at her former workspace within an hour. She assures them she’s certain about the identity of the culprit, and that brings us to the end of this episode.

It appears that we might never get to find out how the story ends, as “Grotesquerie” hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet. There are not enough hints for us to guess how it will all turn out on our own. In an interview with Deadline, Niecy Nash mentioned that she doesn’t know how the series is meant to end and is just as eager as fans to see what happens next.
