The Diplomat season 3: Everything we know so far

As a seasoned gamer who’s navigated through countless virtual worlds and political landscapes, I can confidently say that The Diplomat is one of those rare shows that keeps me hooked till the very end. The third season renewal was like striking gold for me, as it means more intrigue, drama, and Keri Russell’s captivating portrayal of Kate Wyler.

To the frustration of her adversaries, Kate Wyler remains steadfast in her position as the U.S. Ambassador! The third season of the Diplomat was officially confirmed by Netflix on October 10, over three weeks before the anticipated launch of the political thriller’s second season. There is plenty more political intrigue ahead for Kate, with additional twists and turns likely following the surprising conclusion of season 2.

As production on season 3 of “The Diplomat” moves forward, fans are eagerly anticipating any news regarding the upcoming episodes. Here’s what we know so far about season 3 of “The Diplomat,” as details are unveiled by Netflix: filming locations, episode count, and potential plot developments.

The Diplomat season 3 now filming

As I excitedly awaited the renewal of my favorite show on the very same day, Netflix dropped a bombshell – filming for season 3 was already underway! What blew me away was that they’re shooting in not one, but two cities this time: London and the Big Apple itself, New York City. This unique setup brings our talented creator Debora Cahn and the amazing Keri Russell closer to their families back in the Big Apple. Can’t wait to see how this will impact the series!

Since the Hollywood labor strikes disrupted the filming of season 2 during 2023, we can’t use the schedule from that season for season 3. The production for season 2 started in June 2023 but was halted due to a strike by actors. Filming eventually wrapped up around spring of 2024, as confirmed by one of the series stars in early June 2024.

Despite having just six episodes in Season 2, the creator has decided to return to eight episodes per season for Season 3, similar to the first season. This increased episode count will slightly prolong the filming duration, but not significantly. We expect that production will be completed around early 2025, with a potential release either during summer or fall of the same year.

Release Prediction: Summer or Fall 2025

Main and recurring cast members

For the upcoming third season of “The Diplomat,” it is anticipated that the principal actors will remain the same, although there could be new additions or promotions for recurring characters. The Emmy Award-nominated Keri Russell is set to return in her leading role as Kate Wyler, with Rufus Sewell reprising his character as Kate’s close friend and confidant, Hal, who is also her husband.

Here’s the talented main cast of the show expected to return for season 3:

  • Keri Russell as Kate Wyler
  • Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
  • David Gyasi as Austin Dennison (UK Foreign Secretary)
  • Ali Ahn as Eidra Park (CIA station chief)
  • Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge (UK Prime Minister)
  • Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford (U.S. embassy deputy chief of mission)

As a dedicated gamer, I’m always excited about the intricate worlds that shows create, and this one is no exception. The tight-knit main crew may be small, but the vast political universe is brought to life by an array of recurring and guest characters. Come season 3, some of these key players might have their screen time altered – either less or more – but rest assured, they’ll reappear within this fictional realm in some form or another. No spoilers here yet, fellow gaming enthusiasts!

These are the most frequently seen recurring stars expected to appear in season 3:

  • Celia Imrie as Margaret Roylin
  • Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Ganon (U.S. Secretary of State)
  • Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah (White House Chief of Staff)
  • Michael McKean as President William Rayburn
  • Allison Janney as Vice President Grace Penn

WARNING: Major spoilers from The Diplomat season 2 ahead!

What could happen next in season 3

Hey fellow gaming enthusiast! If you haven’t caught up with season 2 of “The Diplomat” yet, it might be best to steer clear for a bit. Spoiler alert! We’re diving right in without any holding back.

In the fifth episode of season 2, it transpires that Vice President Grace Penn was behind the idea for Roylin to hire Lenkov to fire upon the ship. This revelation shakes up Hal, but eventually prompts him to conclude that he aspires to be vice president and that they should inform Secretary of State Ganon about Penn’s involvement in the incident. To put it simply, Hal doesn’t always follow orders.

Instead of asking Ganon for damning information about Grace Penn from Margaret Roylin, Hal decides to share the intel directly with President Rayburn. However, the shocking news about his Vice President proves too much for Rayburn and he suffers a fatal heart attack. With mere seconds left in season 2, Grace Penn is sworn in as the new President of the United States.

It’s clear that Rayburn’s passing and Penn taking over as president brings up several issues and implications. Since the Wylers are aware of Penn’s actions, will she appoint Kate as her vice president to keep her adversaries at bay? How might Kate respond when Hal unintentionally causes the president’s death? Will Kate still have the desire to seek the vice presidency after this incident?

Buckle up once again, fellow enthusiasts, as I eagerly anticipate the thrilling twists and turns that await us in The Diplomat season 3! My troubles, it seems, are multiplying like never before, with each new challenge becoming progressively more intricate on the political stage.

Watch The Diplomat only on Netflix.
