Doctor Odyssey is taking a break for Halloween, and here's when it's back

As a fan who has weathered countless TV series through thick and thin since the golden age of television, I must say that Doctor Odyssey is a breath of fresh air. The show’s blend of 70s-style anthology storytelling with modern drama and high-profile guest stars has me hooked. The unique twist of each episode having a different theme adds an exciting layer of anticipation, and I can’t get enough of the love triangle between Avery, Tristian, and Max.

Doctor Odyssey is taking its first break for its first season on ABC. When will it set sail again?

Among ABC’s most stylish offerings for the 2024 season, the series Doctor Odyssey, harks back to the storytelling style of 1970s TV shows like The Love Boat. As expected, this is due to its creator, renowned producer Ryan Murphy, who often leverages his extensive contacts for a touch of engaging drama. The primary setting is aboard the lavish cruise ship featured in the show, which transports passengers on unforgettable week-long journeys.

The pilot employs nurses Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo) and Tristian Silva (Sean Teale), who are taken aback when they receive a new superior, Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson). Previously renowned as a skilled surgeon, Max was labeled “Patient Zero” for the COVID-19 pandemic, which came close to taking his life. As a result, he’s chosen to scale back and take on what he believes will be a less demanding role.

It doesn’t take Max long to discover that a cruise ship is filled with numerous medical emergencies that he and Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson) promptly address with their team. Additionally, Max finds himself developing feelings for Avery, but this relationship becomes intricate due to Tristian’s past affection for her, forming an unusual love triangle.

Each episode in the series presents a unique topic, ranging from the world of plastic surgery to a spooky Halloween extravaganza. Notable celebrities have graced the screens for each episode, including stars such as Gina Gershon, Shania Twain, Margaret Cho, and many others.

The series has sparked some audience members to ponder a fan theory suggesting that the entire mystical voyage might be a hallucination experienced by Max, who was close to death. Although the cast remains elusive about this, it certainly gives an intriguing twist to the show.

Doctor Odyssey is taking a break this week

The show has been successful in the viewership due to being preceded by shows like “911” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” It will soon take a brief hiatus, which is logical since Thursday, October 31st is Halloween, and ABC chooses not to air original content on evenings when people are likely attending parties and celebrations instead.

Tonight, you can catch a repeat of the second episode from this season at the regular 9 p.m. time in both Eastern and Pacific Time. Additionally, a special Halloween-themed episode will air starting at 10 p.m., also in both Eastern and Pacific Time.

So when does Doctor Odyssey return?

When does Doctor Odyssey return?

The series resumes on November 7th, which coincides with the November ratings period. Judging by the title, the upcoming episode seems to be “I Always Cry at Weddings,” suggesting that multiple weddings will take place aboard the vessel.

The promotional material displays the attendee roster featuring Emmy-winning actress Margo Martindale, as well as hinting at a significant medical emergency potentially disrupting the wedding. However, viewers can rest assured that it will maintain its signature blend of suspense, love, and humor – elements that have propelled Doctor Odyssey to stardom and kept it afloat on ABC.

Doctor Odyssey returns Thursday Nov. 7 at 10/9c on ABC.
