As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours engrossed in the high-octane world of 911, I must say that the prospect of a Hawaii-based spinoff is both exhilarating and concerning. The thought of the show’s iconic action unfolding against the backdrop of tropical paradise is undeniably tantalizing. However, as someone who has seen my fair share of bills after a night out in Waikiki, I can’t help but wonder about the financial feasibility of this venture.
Could 911 fans be saying “aloha” to a Hawaii-based spinoff? Here’s what we know!
911 has been a consistent success with six seasons on Fox, only to be unexpectedly taken off the air by the network. What added to the surprise was that simultaneously, the show switched over to ABC. Such a move is unusual for an already popular show, but so far, it seems to have proven beneficial for 911.
Due to ABC’s larger budgets, they can stage more elaborate productions such as the cruise ship disaster in Season 7 and the “Beenado” and plane emergency in Season 8. However, Season 7 was reduced to just ten episodes because of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, whereas Season 8 is expected to have a full 22 episodes.
A new 911 spin-off in the works
Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that “911: Lone Star” will conclude with its current fifth season. Due to lower ratings without the main “911” show and the high production costs associated with it, the spin-off series had to come to an end. However, the original “911” is still ongoing.
Creator Ryan Murphy has been subtly suggesting that a new series based on the popular show “911” might be in the works. It makes sense, given ABC’s desire to capitalize on the show’s success and the numerous cities that could potentially serve as settings for a spin-off.
It seemed that Miami stood as a strong candidate due to its abundant resources for emergencies and the appealing backdrop of its sun-kissed beaches, making it an attractive choice for viewers.
According to a recent report by Deadline, it seems that ABC is considering Hawaii as a potential location for a fresh take on 911. This could be due to their aim to maintain the cheerful and tropical atmosphere of shows such as Doctor Odyssey, which has recently gained popularity. While this idea might be intriguing, there are certainly some obstacles to consider.
Why 911: Hawaii may be problematic
One obvious issue is that Fox already has its own Hawaii-based show in Rescue: Hi-Surf. Granted, shows set in the same state are commonplace yet viewers may feel the need for another Hawaii-based rescue show is a bit much.
The primary concern lies in the fact that producing films in Hawaii is quite expensive due to limited incentives and tax breaks compared to California, and the challenges of filming across multiple islands make it tougher. For instance, the series “Rescue: Hi-Surf” reportedly spends around $3-4 million per episode, with a lower budget due to its cast being mostly newcomers who don’t demand high paychecks. Interestingly, the expensive production costs were likely a significant factor in CBS deciding to cancel NCIS: Hawaii, despite its popularity as a ratings success.
In order to maintain its reputation, a potential spin-off of 911 might feature a well-known actor or actress. This high-profile cast member will undoubtedly boost the production budget, as 911 is known for its grand disaster scenes and emergency situations. Such storylines prove particularly challenging for shows set in Los Angeles, let alone Hawaii.
To this point, these are merely rumors and ABC might opt for another city instead. Some supporters may yearn for a series set in a city like Boston or Philadelphia, where colder climates could lead to diverse emergencies. The budget might be the determining factor, but the concept of 911 in Hawaii remains enticing for fans.
911 Season 8 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
