As a die-hard fan of the twisted and terrifying world of Jigsaw, I can confidently say that the Saw franchise has left an indelible mark on horror cinema for the past two decades. The first film, a low-budget gem that burst onto the scene in 2004, took the genre by storm with its innovative concept and gripping storytelling.
For two full decades now, we’ve been captivated by Jigsaw and his chilling traps, ever since they made their debut in the movie “Saw” back in 2004. What started as a modest independent film has grown into an eleven-part series of heart-stopping horror movies. On this significant anniversary, director James Wan reflects on the lasting impact of the Saw franchise and shares his favorite trap from the series.
Approximately two decades back, the character Jigsaw first appeared on screen in the initial Saw movie. The narrative was straightforward, involving two individuals chained in a dilapidated bathroom, struggling to survive. However, Jigsaw differed from typical villains audiences were accustomed to. Rather than directly causing their demise, he would focus on those he perceived as morally flawed and offer them a “choice.” The individuals ensnared in Jigsaw’s high-stress traps found themselves faced with the dilemma of addressing their wrongdoings or enduring his gruesome devices.
In an interview with People to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Saw, director James Wan admitted that he hadn’t anticipated producing nine sequels from the horror franchise. He shared his gratitude for the success of his first major directing project, stating how fortunate he felt that it had made such a significant impact.
The Salem’s Lot director expressed his amazement, stating, “We honestly believed we were producing a modest, direct-to-video film. Yet it surpassed our expectations at Sundance and later in theaters, leading to the remarkable life it now has. It’s been an extraordinary journey, one I will forever be grateful for.
The gory fun is far from over! Another installment of the Saw series, number eleven, is scheduled for release in September 2025, picking up where Saw X left off.
What is James Wan’s favorite trap?
Director James Wan, in reflecting on the 20th anniversary of Saw, can’t help but single out his preferred trap from the film. In an open discussion, The Conjuring director pointed to a particular torture device as being the most memorable: “Indeed, it was the jaw trap worn by Amanda Young that left the deepest impression.
In the initial Saw film, Amanda Young found herself with a Reverse Bear Trap fastened to her jaws. She had mere seconds to get a key hidden inside an almost unconscious man before the trap forcibly separated her head. With Amanda managing to escape, this intense, high-risk scene marked her as Jigsaw’s first known survivor.
To commemorate Saw’s 20th anniversary, you have the opportunity to enjoy the horror franchise in sequence. The first eight films are now streaming on both Peacock and Max. For the latest installment, titled Saw X, head over to Starz to catch it!
