What happened to Marathon? Bungie finally provides update on their extraction shooter

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and anticipation upon hearing about Bungie’s latest project, Marathon. Having grown up on Halo and Destiny, I’ve always admired the unique blend of storytelling, gameplay mechanics, and immersive worlds that Bungie has mastered.

At last, there’s some fresh news about the much-awaited extract-based shooter from Bungie, which goes by the name Marathon.

Bungie believe Marathon can thrive as a unique, hero-based extraction shooter

Just the other day, I caught a video featuring Joe Ziegler, the Game Director for Marathon, dishing out some juicy insights about where we’re at with this game and what lies ahead. His words hint that there’s a good chance Marathon could create its own unique space in the gaming world.

In the game Marathon, players find themselves plunged into a changing setting, where they gather precious items and strive to make it out without harm. However, the risks are significant: should you meet defeat on the battlefield, any treasures and equipment amassed by you can be seized by other players.

Characters have the option to select distinct “heroes,” each possessing unique skills—a combination of firearms and special powers that Bungie has demonstrated mastery in their Destiny series.

In the video, Joe Ziegler made it clear that we shouldn’t anticipate any more updates or news regarding Marathon until 2025. At present, the game is still being developed, and several aspects such as character designs are still being fine-tuned.

Despite the fact that Marathon isn’t quite ready for its official debut just yet, since limited player testing has already commenced and expansion plans are scheduled for 2025, it’s clear that the game is not being left by the wayside. So, we can expect a possible launch of the game in 2026.

How do you feel about Bungie’s latest venture? Is their innovative approach to the extract-based shooter style piquing your curiosity, or does it leave you unaffected? To be honest, we’re really looking forward to seeing how this develops…
