Trick ‘r Treat 2: Director Michael Dougherty Is ‘Very, Very Happy’ With the Script

As a dedicated horror enthusiast who has watched countless films over the years, I can confidently say that Trick ‘r Treat is one of those rare gems that truly stands out. It’s not just a movie; it’s an experience, a Halloween tradition that transcends the screen and seeps into your very soul. So when I heard Michael Dougherty, the mastermind behind this delightfully terrifying masterpiece, express his satisfaction with the script for Trick ‘r Treat 2, my heart skipped a beat!

Michael Dougherty is “very, very happy” with the script for Trick ‘r Treat 2.

Trick ‘r Treat is a horror film compilation directed by Dougherty featuring actors like Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin, and Brian Cox. Initially planned for a 2007 cinema release, the movie was instead distributed directly to DVD in 2009 following screenings at various festivals.

Ever since its release, the movie Trick ‘r Treat has developed a devoted fanbase and is widely recognized as a timeless Halloween horror masterpiece. However, despite years of planning, an official sequel to the film has not yet received approval for production.

According to Bloody Disgusting, in a fresh commentary for the Trick ‘r Treat 4K Ultra HD release, director Dougherty shares insights about the ongoing developments regarding Trick ‘r Treat 2.

What did Michael Dougherty say about Trick ‘r Treat 2?

“It’s tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies,” he said. “…There aren’t the typical metrics that a studio can point to to make it an easy ‘yes.’ Something I was adamant about in the sequel was that it has to retain this nonlinear storytelling, [and] it has to retain that weird mix of horror and comedy,””

According to Dougherty, he continues to have plans for a second installment of Trick ‘r Treat, assuring us that it’s not in any danger of being abandoned.

“We have some momentum moving in the right direction for sure, but I’m also of the belief that I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifice just to make a sequel. It has the be under the right conditions with the right resources. Otherwise, I will be content with just letting this be this weird little movie that fought its way through a lot of adversity,” he said. “…But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”

You can now buy the 4K Ultra HD version of “Trick ‘r Treat” from Arrow Video. At the moment, you can also stream this movie on Max.
