As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s been following the Venom saga since its inception, I must say that Venom: The Last Dance left me with mixed feelings. The film’s underperformance in the US was a bit of a letdown, especially considering the hype surrounding Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock and his symbiote pal. However, the international success, particularly in China, was nothing short of spectacular!
As a die-hard fan, I attended the premiere of “Venom: The Last Dance” on October 25, 2024, in US theaters. Directed by Kelly Marcel and featuring the exceptional performance of Tom Hardy, the movie didn’t quite meet its projected success domestically, earning a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Venom 3’s domestic box office starts slow, but cruises internationally
As a gaming enthusiast who occasionally dips into cinema, I found myself immersed in Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance over the weekend. Globally, it was a resounding success with an impressive $175 million box office haul, but sadly, it fell short of expectations here in the US. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s where the underperformance lies.
Within our country, the movie brought in $51 million, which was lower than the predicted $65 million. This was notably less than its previous installments, Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which debuted with $80 million and $90 million respectively. Yet, strong performances in international markets, particularly China, helped increase the film’s total earnings.
In the global arena during 2024, the movie brought in a staggering $124 million from 64 different countries, placing it third among the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of the year, following Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. The film’s earnings skyrocketed to $46 million alone in China, making it the largest Hollywood opening in that country for the year. Additionally, this release marked the largest debut for a superhero movie in China since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.
As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to see the Venom franchise extending its influence internationally, particularly in China, where the recent performance is a testament to this global appeal. Meanwhile, domestically, interest seems to be somewhat dampened due to competition, such as the ongoing World Series. Sony’s investment in The Last Dance, a production estimated at around $120 million, has resonated strongly in international markets, demonstrating its success on a global scale.
Global performances of the film align with Sony’s expectations for the expansion of the Venom universe. Analysts attribute the relatively lower domestic performance to comic book saturation and seasonal factors like Halloween, whereas the film’s success overseas underscores its robust appeal internationally.
