As a devoted fan of Kyle Gallner, I must say that watching his career unfold over the years has been nothing short of exhilarating! From his early days on The Haunting in Connecticut to his current role in Smile 2, he’s proven time and again that he’s got the chops for any role thrown his way.
In his newest flick, titled “Smile 2“, Kyle Gallner once again takes on the character he played in the initial movie that hit theaters in 2022. The first film was not only a breakthrough for Gallner but also served as the directorial premiere for Parker Finn, who is also steering the sequel’s production.
The narrative behind the movie “Smile” is derived from the short film “Laura Hasn’t Slept,” which was first shown at SXSW in 2020. This short film features Caitlin Stasey and Lew Temple, who plays a character on “The Walking Dead.” The short film received a Special Jury Recognition at SXSW and you can watch it here below.
In 2022, Finn’s debut film was met with tremendous acclaim at its premiere. The following sequel was launched in 2024, and some critics argue that it surpasses the original film.
In the initial movie, Sosie Bacon portrays Rose Cotter, a psychotherapist. After seeing a horrific self-destruction of one of her patients, she encounters unsettling occurrences that make her suspect some eerie powers are involved. Gallner takes on the role of Joel, who is Rose’s former partner and serves as a police officer. Jesse T. Usher appears as Rose’s present boyfriend, while Caitlin Stasey reappears in her character Laura from Finn’s original short.
In this revised version, Smile 2 showcases Naomi Scott as the Grammy-winning international pop sensation Skye Riley. Following her return to the music scene, she encounters strange visual and aural hallucinations. These experiences compel her to confront her past and maintain stability in her life to prevent another downward spiral.
The new cast for “Smile 2” features Kyla Galler returning as Joel, a character from the initial movie, alongside Rosemarie DeWitt who plays Skye’s mother and manager. Lukas Gage is introduced as Lewis, a drug dealer connected to Skye, while Miles Gutierrez-Riley portrays Joshua, Skye’s assistant. Raul Castillo takes on the role of Darius, head of the record company. Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson, and Dylan Gelula are also part of the ensemble.
Kyle Gallner graced the red carpet at the Smile 2 premiere, sharing his experience on social media with the caption “Last night, I had to act like an adult for the first time in a while, so forgive me for the excessive posts.” Here’s all the Kyle Gallner excitement for you!
In 2023, Gallner – often referred to as the “Scream King” – graced the screens in two horror/thrillers: JT Mollner’s movie titled Strange Darling and Carter Smith’s Blumhouse production called The Passenger. Both films were met with favorable critiques. Previously, he had notable roles in Scream (2022), Ghosts of War, The Cleansing Hour, Red State, Jennifer’s Body, and other projects.
In 2009, Gallner played Matt Campbell, a character battling cancer, in the chilling supernatural horror film “The Haunting in Connecticut“. As they moved nearer to a medical facility for his treatments, they uncovered that their new home had been a mortuary used for occult practices aimed at communicating with the deceased. Subsequently, Matt and his family encountered malevolent supernatural entities that continued to torment them.
Among his cherished projects, Gallner has a special attachment to the 2020 dark comedy “Dinner in America,” where he shared the screen with Emily Skeggs, notably known for her role in “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
Up next, Gallner will feature alongside Samara Weaving, Kyra Sedgwick, and Jon Gries in the romantic-crime-thriller titled Carolina Caroline.
Gallner also played the character Zach during season 4 of “The Walking Dead.” In episode 401 titled “30 Days Without an Accident,” he appeared alongside Daryl (Norman Reedus) and a group on a supply run. Zach was Beth’s (Emily Kinney) boyfriend who attempted to figure out Daryl’s previous job. Tragically, Zach was devoured by walkers, and later met his demise when a helicopter crashed into the store’s ceiling, collapsing it and crushing him.
