Alien: Rogue Incursion challenges you to watch your step

As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise and a seasoned VR enthusiast, I can confidently say that Survios has managed to strike a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation with their upcoming release, Alien: Rogue Incursion. The immersive atmosphere and attention to detail in the game’s environment are reminiscent of my first encounter with the series back in the 80s, but with the added thrill of virtual reality.

For several decades, the Alien series has been transformed into video games, with varying levels of achievement. The games typically fit into two main categories: either replicating the chilling ambiance of the initial film or veering towards the action-packed style of the Colonial Marines. Now, developer Survios aims to blend aspects from both worlds as they introduce Alien to virtual reality for the first time with the upcoming Alien: Rogue Incursion. Shacknews recently got a sneak peek at this innovative gameplay.

In the realm of virtual reality (VR), Survios isn’t new to crafting cinematic environments. They’ve demonstrated this skill through games like The Walking Dead: Onslaught. For Alien: Rogue Incursion, players find themselves assuming the character of ex-Colonial Marine Zula Hendricks, who is suddenly trapped in a wrecked GES facility overrun by loose aliens. As chaos reigns, the task for players is to link up with Davis, another stranded Colonial Marine, who also happens to be their partner within the game.

In this game, players won’t be completely vulnerable to the alien menace. They will have access to the iconic pulse rifle on their right shoulder, requiring both hands to handle it comfortably. The reload magazines are conveniently placed in the user’s left front pocket. A revolver is also at hand for those fast-paced situations. Additionally, players can rely on a Motion Tracker situated on their right hip. This device is crucial for detecting Xenomorph movements and will signal when it’s safer to stand still or launch an attack. Since some weapons are quite large, the Motion Tracker can be put down anywhere without fear of losing it. It automatically returns to the player’s inventory, even if not manually stowed away. A useful tablet will provide players with essential information, such as maps and objectives. This tablet can be accessed through the equipment wheel, which also enables a swift change of main weapons.

Even though guards are equipped with weapons, it doesn’t guarantee the environment is safe. Creatures like Facehuggers and Xenomorphs might attack if they overhear too much noise. Many actions could draw unnecessary attention. In the beginning of the game, there’s a section where a door ahead is sealed shut with welding. While the ME2 Hand Torch can help you pass, welding itself can be loud enough to lure nearby aliens.

Xenomorphs tend to fall after being hit by pulse rifle shots, but they’ll usually retaliate and their hits accumulate over time. It’s generally suggested to take the stealth approach when playing, though maintaining silence isn’t always simple. Remember that while Survios has included a helpful feature that lets players discard items without having to store them manually, dropping anything can create a loud “clang” sound that alerts nearby aliens.

In Rogue Incursion, although Zula is primarily going solo, she won’t be completely alone as Davis, a CPU-controlled character, joins her. As you progress deeper into the facility, Davis becomes an ally, effectively handling larger Xenomorphs while smaller ones that suddenly appear are more manageable for Zula. There comes a moment when you need to interact with a card reader, and just then, a solitary Xenomorph attacks. It manages to strike Zula, but fortunately, Davis steps in to help eliminate the threat.

In Alien: Rogue Incursion, the developers aim to highlight the most impressive elements of the series, focusing especially on its golden age. Survios, a company that’s been evolving within the VR gaming industry for close to a decade, seems well-equipped for the challenge. There are numerous facets of this game yet unexplored, so it remains to be seen if it truly delivers on the potential suggested by the concept of “Alien in VR.” Mark your calendars for December 19, as Alien: Rogue Incursion is set to launch on Steam VR, PlayStation VR2, and Meta Quest 3.

This sneak peek is derived from a preliminary demonstration held at Survios’ office in Marina Del Rey, CA, using the Meta Quest 3. Please note that the finished item might undergo modifications.
