As a long-time fan of both Robert Downey Jr. and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that his recent comments about Elon Musk have piqued my interest. While it’s intriguing to see the real-life parallels between Tony Stark and Musk, I can’t help but feel a tad amused by Downey Jr.’s advice for Musk to “control his behavior.” After all, who among us hasn’t felt the need to impart wisdom on the world’s most influential figures?
More recently, Robert Downey Jr. voiced his thoughts regarding comparisons drawn between his MCU character Tony Stark and Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX. Introduced back in 2008, Downey’s portrayal of Stark quickly endeared itself to fans due to its combination of brilliance, arrogance, and sharp wit. Although Stark was initially modeled after Marvel comics characters, the authors added elements reminiscent of Musk, which led many fans to view Musk as a real-life embodiment of Tony Stark. Now, Downey Jr. has shared his perspective on these comparisons, expressing what appears to be a mix of feelings.
Robert Downey Jr. comments on Elon Musk’s behavior
On a recent episode of Kara Swisher’s podcast, Downey Jr. spoke about Tesla CEO Elon Musk emulating Tony Stark in real life. When asked by the host, he shared that they have met on several occasions. Yet, he offered him some suggestions regarding his conduct.
He expressed a desire for him to rein in his actions a bit more, but it’s not my responsibility. To be honest, the notion that “Everything’s fine because we need to get to Mars” doesn’t sit well with me, he stated. Yet, he did recognize Musk’s overall achievements and referred to him as “valuable.” (paraphrased from Variety)
In a notable appearance, Elon Musk appeared in the film Iron Man 2, led by RJD and released in 2010. The scene takes place during the Monaco Grand Prix, where Stark meets Musk. Initially, Stark congratulates Pepper Potts on her promotion at Stark Industries. Later, Stark greets Musk, praising his Merlin engines. In response, Musk acknowledges the compliment and hints at an idea for an electric jet. Stark responds positively, saying they’ll find a way to make it work. Interestingly, filming for Iron Man 2 also took place at SpaceX without any cost.
Although Musk’s on-screen time was limited, his character significantly impacted the depiction of Stark in some aspects. In an earlier conversation with Recode Decode, Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau shared that they consulted Musk to help shape the Iron Man character.
According to The Vox, he stated that during the preparation for “Iron Man,” Robert Downey Jr. suggested, “There’s someone we should have a conversation with.” He further explained that this individual could provide valuable insights into what it would truly be like to be Tony Stark. Furthermore, he added that Musk is considered a “good friend” within the Marvel family.
