As a Northern Irishman who lived through The Troubles, I must admit that the trailer for Say Nothing left me feeling somewhat bewildered and disheartened. While I appreciate the creative liberties taken to make a compelling drama, the tone and portrayal of the events depicted seem to be far removed from the grim reality we experienced during those dark times.
The newly released trailer for Say Nothing has been criticized over its “absolutely wild” tone.
According to Patrick Radden Keefe’s highly-regarded nonfiction book, Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland, an upcoming historical drama, produced by Josh Zetumer, will explore the lives of people who experienced The Troubles and also delve into the tale of those referred to as “The Disappeared.
“The summary reveals that ‘Say Nothing’ is an intense tale about murder and remembrance set against the backdrop of Northern Ireland’s conflict, The Troubles. Over four decades, the narrative starts with the chilling event of Jean McConville, a mother of ten, being forcibly taken from her house in 1972, leaving her fate unknown.

Why are people upset over the Say Nothing trailer?
On the r/northernireland Reddit forum, users are sharing their thoughts about the Say Nothing movie trailer.
“This actually looks like a parody. wtf is this. Completely wrong tone considering the book’s subject and tone this more looks like a f—ing action flick ffs,” a redditor wrote, with one replying to the thread, “I cringed the whole way through that. It’s a very serious subject and as you say the book was a very serious and somber tone. Has Derry Girls now poisoned anything Northern Irish to be seen as something quirky and “oh funny accents haha”. Even when car bombs are going off.”
One user even said that the trailer “was like an advert for the IRA!”
“The writing and research in this book were superb, except for the speculative conclusion. However, it never glamorized the IRA and maintained deep sympathy and respect for the McConville family throughout.
A comment from YouTube also pointed out that the trailer looks “offensive,” saying, “So you’re making a high gloss, MTV-cut series that shows terrorists, murderers as cool, witty, righteous glamour girls… At least that’s how the trailer presents it. That poor guilt-ridden little girl Dolours, oh my! I liked the book, the trailer looks just offensive. Not one second victim perspective. Only glamourizing violence.”
The miniseries “Nothing” features Lola Petticrew portraying Dolours Price, Hazel Doupe playing Marian Price, Anthony Boyle taking on the role of Brendan Hughes, and Josh Finan as Gerry Adams. This series can be streamed on Hulu starting from November 14.
