Netflix shuts down its game studio

As a lifelong gaming enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, witnessing yet another high-profile studio shutdown leaves me with a bitter taste and a heavy heart. I remember when Netflix first announced Team Blue, promising to bring together some of the industry’s most talented veterans to create a triple-A game. The prospect was exhilarating, and I held onto hope that this could be the game that would finally solidify Netflix’s place in the gaming world.

Netflix tried once more to get into the gaming industry and, yet again, failed.

Team Blue shut down

Netflix’s Game Studio” went by the catchy moniker “Team Blue“, a name chosen with the hope that it would lead them to long-awaited triumph in the competitive gaming industry.

Netflix has created several original video content drawn from popular games such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, showcasing their ability to adapt established gaming worlds for TV. However, creating their own games has proven more challenging for them.

Team Blue was brought onboard by Netflix, as they sought top-tier talent from the gaming sector to develop an AAA-quality game using their expertise.

Specifically, Chacko Sonny, the executive producer of Overwatch, would head Team Blue. In a similar role for the Halo series, we have Joseph Straten, known as the creative lead. Lastly, Rafael Grassetti, an ardent art director from God of War, completes our team.

By October 2024, Team Blue will no longer be operational. All the employees Netflix recruited for this team have since been terminated.
