Netflix's Southern California game studio has been shut down

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that this latest news from Netflix has left me a bit puzzled and somewhat concerned. The closure of Team Blue, their AAA video game studio, comes as a surprise, given the caliber of talent they had amassed and the ambitious projects they were undertaking.

It appears that Netflix’s video game development studio in Southern California, known for hosting top-tier developers and working on a significant, multi-platform original intellectual property, has reportedly shut down.

Netflix's Southern California game studio has been shut down

On October 21, 2024, according to Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Netflix decided to close down one of its high-end video game studios, named Team Blue. This studio was said to be developing a multi-platform, expensive original intellectual property (IP) for Netflix.

Netflix has recently added Joseph Staten, a former Bungie team member known for directing cinematics and creating the original Halo trilogy, to their studio. Additionally, it’s been reported that Chacko Sonny, who parted ways with Activision Blizzard at the end of last year, has also joined Netflix.

It’s quite unexpected that Netflix appears to be scaling back its video game endeavors significantly. Not long ago, they unveiled plans for a Squid Game multiplayer game, which was set to debut alongside season 2 of the popular series. Additionally, they’ve been adding popular games such as Grand Theft Auto to their subscription service, which have been well-received by subscribers.

The future of Joseph Staten, Chacko Sonny, Rafael Grassetti, and the rest of Team Blue’s work at Netflix is yet undecided. It’s unclear if the game they were developing has been scrapped by Netflix or will be taken up by another studio. Stay tuned to our Netflix Games page for updates.
