On December 25th, 1996, JonBenét’s parents found that their daughter was missing at home. A ransom note was left behind and her six-year-old body was later discovered in the basement. The incident was classified as a homicide, yet despite numerous leads over the years, the case remains unsolved.
JonBenét Ramsey docuseries coming to Netflix in November 2024
In the freshly released three-part documentary series, Berlinger dives back into the case and meticulously explores every angle to uncover the truth. The series titled “Cold Case” provides unique viewpoints through conversations with those involved in the investigation and even features John Ramsey, JonBenét’s father.
According to Deadline, director Joe Berlinger boasts about having exceptional, unparalleled access to the inquiry surrounding a crime. Through his three-part production, he intends to reveal the underlying faults that transformed a child’s homicide into a decade-long whirlwind of conspiracy theories.
Many people think they know the JonBenét Ramsey story and have played armchair detective for three decades, often callously pointing a finger at the very people who suffered such an unthinkable loss. Through unprecedented access and a comprehensive multi-year investigation, we reveal the deep flaws in how the case was originally handled, resulting in a sea of conspiracy theories that nearly destroyed the Ramsey family for a second time.
Previously, Berlinger helmed the 2019 Netflix film titled “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” featuring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy. Following the broadcast of his Emmy-nominated 1996 documentary “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills” on HBO, along with its two follow-ups in 2000 and 2011, the individuals portrayed in the film, known as the West Memphis Three, were able to gain their freedom from prison. Berlinger’s works have the potential to bring about change, much like they did for the West Memphis Three, which could also be applicable to the Ramsey case.
In September of this year, it was revealed that Paramount+ would be releasing a limited series based on the JonBenét Ramsey case, which will be fictionalized. This project is being developed by Richard LaGravenese, and it features Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen portraying Patsy and John Ramsey respectively. The ensemble cast also includes Margo Martindale, Emily Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Owen Teague, Clifton Collins Jr., Rory Cochrane, Chris Bauer, Angus Caldwell, Shea Whigham, Will Patton, Jaime Ray Newman, and Josh Stamberg.
