The Penguin Episode 5 Ending Explained: Why Does Sofia Change Her Name?

What happens at the end of The Penguin Episode 5?

In the heat of the gaming world, I correctly called it when Oz seized the moment after Sofia slaughtered her kin. With the Maronis in turmoil, he saw an opening and decided to take action. So, in a bold move, I orchestrated the abduction of Salvatore (Clancy Brown) and Taz, Nadia Maronis’ (Shohreh Aghdashloo) beloved son, aiming to shake up their empire.

Unlike Carmine, who doesn’t prioritize his family or give into demands, Salvatore is deeply concerned about his loved ones and obliges Oz with returning the mushrooms. However, during this transaction, a gunfight erupts, resulting in Oz setting fire to Nadia and Taz. He also organizes Salvatore’s death in prison, but the Maroni family leader miraculously survives and eventually escapes. Later, Sofia, now leading the Gigante clan, persuades Salvatore to unite against Oz in their ongoing struggle.

In another part of the story, Oz learns that many of the mushrooms responsible for Bliss have been devastated in his fight against the Maronis. This is the first time in the saga where he genuinely feels endangered, causing him to make a hasty retreat back to Crown Point. There, he seeks protection for Francis, who Victor had taken earlier for her own safety. In a rare, heartfelt conversation, Oz confides in Victor about his brothers, Jack and Benny, who unfortunately did not escape Crown Point alive, unlike himself.

As the episode nears its conclusion, Oz discovers a token connected to Gotham City’s trolley system. Being the resourceful individual he is, Oz guides Victor through hidden underground tunnels and the long-forgotten trolley station that once served as his brothers’ playground. Though it has been taken over by the city’s sewer system, Oz sees the dampness of the location as an advantage for his new headquarters due to the plentiful growth of mushrooms in the area.

Why does Sofia change her name to Sofia Gigante?

Following the act of poisoning her loved ones, Sofia interrogates Johnny Viti (Michael Kelly) about Carmine’s hidden funds that can’t be traced. Upon discovering he was meant to assist her mother in escaping Carmine, she grants him freedom. However, once he openly contradicts her intentions, Sofia ends Johnny Viti’s life. Accompanied by Julian Rish, Sofia Falcone takes on the surname Gigante, which is her mother’s maiden name, and founds a new criminal empire, symbolizing the demise of the Falcones who betrayed not only Sofia but also her mother.
