Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of October 18, 2024

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that this week has been nothing short of a video game enthusiast’s dream. From the thrilling reveal of new content for old favorites like Super Mario Party Jamboree and Astro Bot, to the tantalizing teases of upcoming releases such as Subnautica 2 and Control’s multiplayer spin-off FBC: Firebreak, it feels like Christmas has come early.

This week saw the resurgence of video game updates, with an Xbox Partner Preview going live on Thursday, generating significant buzz. Meanwhile, Remedy Entertainment, a favorite of ours, had a noteworthy week as well. However, there are several other intriguing video game stories to explore before diving into that!

Super Mario Party Jamboree releases

It wouldn’t be a video game news week without a new game releasing! This week, it’s Super Mario Party Jamboree, which is getting pretty decent reviews. I mean, there’s not a lot of ways you can screw up a Mario Party game, so no one should be surprised. And you’re probably through playing Echoes of Wisdom at this point, so this isn’t a bad game to pick up.

New levels for Astro Bot

Wow, speed enthusiasts are in for an exciting ride with “Astro Bot”! Starting this week and running up until November 14, there’ll be free downloadable content (DLC) released weekly for the game. Each fresh addition will feature not one but two new bots to save in the newly designed levels.

The fresh levels now feature real-time global leaderboards, allowing you to observe your progress relative to players worldwide.

Info on the Analogue 3D

Okay, I didn’t know this was a thing. Analogue is putting out the Analogue 3D, which is a true N64 clone console and touts that it can play every single N64 game in 4k via HDMI and will be region-free. It will also have some fun upgrades, like save states, screenshot capabilities, and more.

This week, they revealed that it will debut in Q1 of 2025 and will be priced at $249. If you’re a nostalgic gamer seeking an upgrade from the Nintendo 64 (something I would have never imagined writing), this seems like a worthwhile investment. Notably, you can purchase three of these for the same price as a PS5 Pro!

Alan Wake 2 DLC Release Date & new Remedy multiplayer game reveal

Due to our enthusiasm as Remedy enthusiasts, they have a dedicated spot in this week’s round-up. We’ve been eagerly awaiting any updates on the upcoming DLC for Alan Wake 2, titled Lake House, since the release of the Night Springs DLC in June. With October being the anticipated launch month, we’ve been anticipating its arrival as we approach the halfway point.

Hey there fellow gamers! Can you believe it’s October 22nd already? It feels like a scene straight out of a horror game, if I do say so myself. And guess who just showed up at the end? None other than Dylan Faden! Grab your pens and notepads, let’s delve into how this ties in with Control!

But that wasn’t all the Remedyverse news for this week! Later on in the showcase, they showed off the Control multiplayer game they’ve been teasing for a few years. It looks like a bunch of 3v3 fun set in and around The Oldest House. It’s officially called FBC: Firebreak.

Additionally, their development team unveiled a sneak peek on YouTube, while Game Director Mike Kayatta spoke in an interview with Xbox Wire.

Xbox Partner Preview highlights

On Thursday, it wasn’t just Remedy that made an appearance at the Xbox Partner Preview. Instead, we got our first glimpse of Subnautica 2 set to release in early access in 2025, a sneak peek at Cronos: The New Dawn from Bloober Team following their Silent Hill 2 remake, a new trailer for Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza, and a fresh gameplay trailer for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
