Riot Games are “Evolving” by cutting even more jobs

As a long-time player and ardent fan of League of Legends, I find myself once again grappling with the bittersweet reality that Riot Games is laying off employees for the second time this year. Having witnessed the vibrant community grow and evolve over the past decade, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern as yet another round of cuts looms over the League of Legends team.

Once more this year, I find myself regrettably witnessing layoffs at Riot. Just a few days ago, our esteemed Chairman and co-founder Marc Merill shared the news, stating that these reductions are necessary for us to “transform League of Legends” and that they’re pouring substantial resources into tackling current issues.

It’s somewhat unusual because it’s said that this layoff affects around 32 individuals, primarily focusing on the League of Legends team. Although this is far less than the 530 employees they let go in January, it’s nonetheless a concerning number.

On X (formerly Twitter), Merill said:

This isn’t about reducint headcount to save money. It’s about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great fpr another 15 years and beyond. Success isn’t about throwing more people or money at a challenge. We’ve seen small teams at Riot build incredible things, while large teams muss the mark.

It’s rumored that the League of Legends team is expected to expand, provided they have the right personnel and focus on the essential aspects.

In the meantime, those who are losing their jobs will receive severance pay on a regular basis, along with six months of healthcare coverage as assistance, according to Merrill.

Can cutting jobs really help League of Legends to improve? We’re unconvinced.
