As a longtime fan of both Josh Brolin’s diverse acting portfolio and Edgar Wright’s innovative filmmaking, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming reimagining of “The Running Man”. With Brolin’s extensive experience playing complex villains, from Dan White in Milk to Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he seems perfectly suited to bring a chilling presence to the lead antagonist role in this dystopian tale.
Josh Brolin has been cast in Edgar Wright’s reimagining of The Running Man.
In April 2024, it became public knowledge that Glen Powell from Hit Man and Top Gun: Maverick, had been chosen to lead a fresh adaptation of The Running Man, set to be helmed by Wright. This upcoming film is an adaption of the 1982 book of the same name penned by Stephen King, which was previously brought to life as a 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Per Deadline, Brolin is in final negotiations to play the lead villain role in the new movie.
2008 saw Brolin being nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, a recognition he received for his portrayal of Dan White in Milk. His acting debut was back in 1985 with The Goonies. Other films he has appeared in include No Country for Old Men (2007), W. (2008), Jonah Hex and True Grit (both released in 2010), Men in Black 3 (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), Sicario (2015), and more recently, Brothers (2024).
Apart from his recognition, he’s famed for portraying Thanos within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cable in last year’s Deadpool 2, as well as Gurney Halleck across the Dune movies.
What else do we know about Edgar Wright’s The Running Man?
King’s novel is set in a dystopian United States in 2025. The narrative centers around a character named Ben Richards, who participates in a lethal television competition to earn enough money for his daughter’s medical treatment. Actors Powell and Brolin are portraying the roles of Richards and the show’s mastermind, respectively.
The screenplay for the film was jointly penned by Wright, who is renowned for creating films like Shaun of the Dead (2004), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), Baby Driver (2017), among others, and Michael Bacall. The movie is produced in collaboration with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg by Wright.
The Running Man will be released in United States theaters on November 21, 2025.
