As an ardent gamer with decades of experience under my belt and a soft spot for innovative titles that push the boundaries of conventional gaming, I find myself intrigued by Project ETHOS. Having traversed the realms of countless hero shooters and roguelikes, I can’t help but be drawn to this unique amalgamation of the two genres. The idea of gradually evolving a character over multiple sessions in a third-person perspective is tantalizingly alluring.

2K Games revealed a fresh game on Thursday, which marks the inaugural project from the team at 31st Union, based in San Francisco. Initially, the game may seem reminiscent of another title, but upon closer inspection, it presents a unique twist. It’s a hero shooter that aims to offer a roguelike (akin to a game similar to “Schmades”) gaming experience. The game is called Project ETHOS and 2K is eagerly inviting users to test it out with a community playtest starting today.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Project ETHOS is an exhilarating third-person roguelike shooter where I step into the shoes of a hero. My objective? To evolve from a simple character into a formidable multi-dimensional menace across numerous gaming sessions. When I dive into the Trials mode, it’s all about facing off against relentless waves of enemies. But between these intense battles, my hero can be enhanced with Evolutions that either supercharge my abilities or lend aid to my comrades. Over the course of my journey, I collect cores which unlock Augments, providing a boost for my current run and future ones too.

In addition, as you may anticipate given the term “hero shooter,” Project ETHOS includes a multiplayer aspect. In its Gauntlet mode, teams compete against each other, with the victorious ones progressing and choosing upgrades between battles. The tournament carries on until only one team remains victorious.

Starting today, the community playtest for Project ETHOS begins! If you’re interested in checking it out, you can grab a PC code by tuning into select Twitch streams and claiming Twitch Drops. By watching a designated stream for half an hour, you’ll receive a game key. This playtest will continue through Sunday, October 20, with servers shutting down at 11 p.m. Pacific Time/2 a.m. Eastern Time each day. Keep in mind that the final version of Project ETHOS is set to launch on PC soon!
