As a gamer with a deep appreciation for cinema and a soft spot for cult classics, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement when it comes to the Boondock Saints franchise. Growing up, I remember the first film coming out just weeks after the Columbine tragedy, which understandably cast a shadow over its release. Yet, despite the initial box office failure, it quickly gained cult status and led to the creation of the sequel.
In the year 1999, Norman Reedus, known for his role in “The Walking Dead,” teamed up with Sean Patrick Flanery, famously villainous in other films, in the initial release of the “Boondock Saints” movie series. They took on the characters of fraternal twin vigilantes Murphy and Connor MacManus in the first and second movies, and they are set to reprise these roles for a third installment.
1999 marked Troy Duffy’s first directorial venture, which was none other than “Boondock Saints.” Later on, he directed its sequel, titled “Boondock Saints: All Saints Day” (2009). The initial release of the film took place only a few weeks following the Columbine High School tragedy. Due to fears of imitation crimes, it was largely underplayed. Despite underperforming at the box office, it swiftly gained cult status and paved the way for the production of its sequel.
Speculation about a third film has been ongoing for quite some time, but in March 2024, it was officially announced that Thunder Road Productions, famous for producing the John Wick series, would team up with Impossible Dream Entertainment and Dragonfly Films to produce the long-anticipated third installment. Additionally, rumors swirled that both Reedus and Flanery were involved in the project, a claim that both actors have since confirmed as true.
Recently, Flanery spoke to Screen Rant, who asked about the film’s production. Flanery shared:
That motherf***er text me last night. He’s one of my best friends. Solid dude. I can’t say that about a lot of people in Hollywood, but that is a solid motherf***er. One of the best dudes in Hollywood, and he’s been a dear friend of mine since ’94. We shot that in ’ 99… We’re shooting between March and August.
This is great news for fans who have longed to see a continuation of the MacManus brothers’ story. The first film followed the brothers who receive a “calling” from God to rid their hometown of Boston of the wicked, so the innocent can flourish. In the second movie the brothers are living in Ireland when they are framed for the murder of a Catholic priest which forces them to return to Boston.
The third part is being referred to as a fresh take and an expansion of the franchise’s universe. Duffy, responsible for a book series focusing on the siblings, will not continue as director. As of now, no news about a new director or additional cast members has been shared. It’s anticipated that if production happens in spring 2025, the film might be released in 2026.
Norman Reedus is widely recognized for his acting roles in “The Walking Dead,” “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” “Blade II,” “Mimic,” and “Red Canyon.” More recently, he has appeared in films like “The Bikeriders,” “Triple 9,” “Sky,” “Air,” and a brief appearance in the 2015 comedy film “Vacation,” which is the fifth installment of the National Lampoon’s “Vacation” series. Additionally, he hosts the AMC Network’s docu-travel series “Ride with Norman Reedus,” where he and his guests embark on motorcycle tours to various destinations around the world.
Sean Patrick Flanery gained recognition for his portrayal of Jeremy “Powder” Reed in the 1995 sci-fi drama Powder. He has since appeared in shows like The Dead Zone, George Lucas’ The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and Saw 3D. In 2023, he took on the role of convicted death row inmate Edward Wayne Brady in the independent Christian thriller Nefarious. Flanery is not only an actor but also a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and teaches this martial art and combat sport as well.
