As a long-time fan of captivating dramas, I must admit, hearing that Tom Ellis’ character Oliver might not return for Tell Me Lies Season 3 left me feeling rather hollow, much like the character himself at the end of season 2! The introduction of Oliver in the sophomore run was a breath of fresh air, and his complex relationship with Bree (Missal) added depth to the narrative.
Meaghan Oppenheimer, the mastermind behind “Tell Me Lies,” shared some unsatisfying news regarding the potential future of Tom Ellis’ character Oliver in the series after it concluded its second season. The character, who debuted in season 2, gained significant popularity among viewers. In addition, Oppenheimer subtly suggested that if Hulu decides to move forward with a third season (which hasn’t been confirmed yet), there could be a time leap involved.
Meaghan Oppenheimer says Tom Ellis’ Oliver unlikely to return in Tell Me Lies Season 3
In a recent chat, Oppenheimer hinted that it’s rather improbable for Tom Ellis to reprise his role as Oliver in the potential third season of Tell Me Lies.
At Baird College, a fictional institution situated in Upstate New York that forms the main backdrop of the show, we find Professor Oliver. His wife, Marianne (played by Gabriella Pession), is also an English professor at this same college. In the second season, Oliver becomes romantically involved with Bree, portrayed by Catherine Missal.
When asked if the Lucifer star would continue in the series, Oppenheimer told Variety, “I believe not.” Tom, it seems, wanted to do only one season. The storyline for his character was concluded satisfactorily, leaving little room for further exploration. There might be a possibility of bringing Marianne back, but there’s a lot more story left to tell about her. However, considering Oliver’s broken and hollow state at the end of this season, I’m ready for Bree to move on from him.
Oppenheimer hints Tell Me Lies Season 3 will have a time jump
During the same interview, Oppenheimer hinted at the possibility of a “time leap” occurring in the third season.
Similar to how its first season was structured, Tell Me Lies Season 2 follows two distinct storylines, set in the years 2008 and 2015. As hinted by Oppenheimer, there may be some unresolved plot points from the 2008 timeline that could carry over into Season 3. However, she suggests that the focus might shift more towards the 2015 narrative, implying a larger proportion of episodes set in 2015 compared to 2008. In the earlier timeline, the main characters are attending college, while they reunite in the later one. If a time jump occurs, it is expected to be from 2008 and not 2015.
