As a die-hard fan of the legendary duo Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam, I have been eagerly awaiting their reunion ever since the rumors of a potential collaboration surfaced. However, Suhasini Maniratnam’s recent remarks have left me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning who just found out that Santa Claus isn’t real – heartbroken and disillusioned.
There’s been a lot of chatter suggesting that Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam could be teaming up for a film following a long hiatus. But Suhasini Maniratnam has put an end to these speculations, providing clarity on the matter.
Recently, I gleefully chimed in during an interview with News18 regarding those tantalizing whispers, “Frankly, I don’t believe even the great Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam themselves are privy to such speculations. It seems only those who pen about it hold the secrets.
Previously speculated, it had been suggested that Rajinikanth and a renowned director might team up on a film after 33 years since their last joint project, Thalapathi. There were talks about the pair considering various scripts, but recent developments indicate these rumors may not be accurate, potentially causing dismay among movie enthusiasts.
Mani Ratnam’s previous film, Thalapathi, was a retelling of the legendary friendship between Karna and Duryodhana from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. In this movie, we follow the story of Surya, a kind-hearted orphan living among the slums, who is well-known for his selfless nature.
But when he forms a friendship with an honorable gangster named Deva who clashes with the newly appointed district administrator, Surya’s life improves. As their rivalry intensifies, Surya uncovers Deva’s connection to the administrator, causing him great emotional conflict as he must decide between loyalty to his friend and allegiance to his family.
In addition to Rajinikanth, the movie featured Mammootty and Arvind Swamy in prominent positions. Furthermore, it showcased several other talented actors such as Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, Geetha, among others, playing crucial roles. Notably, this film represented the last joint project of Ratnam and Ilaiyaraaja; since then, Ratnam has worked with AR Rahman instead.
Speaking about his professional endeavors, Mani Ratnam is engrossed in the post-production phase of his upcoming film titled Thug Life. This project stars Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, marking their collaboration with Ratnam since Nayakan. The movie has generated a lot of excitement due to this reunion, and it boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Trisha Krishnan, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Ashok Selvan, Pankaj Tripathi, Nassar, among others in significant roles.
Alternatively, Rajinikanth has appeared in the movie “Vettaiyan” lately and is currently collaborating with director Lokesh Kanagaraj on the project titled “Coolie”.
