Video game news in review: The biggest news from the week of October 11, 2024

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, this week has been a rollercoaster ride! From the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo to the Halo series making a significant leap forward, there’s never a dull moment in our digital playground.

This week, video game news was abundant and diverse. From top-rated games launched this week to some playful antics from Nintendo, let’s delve straight into it.

New Nintendo hardware!

But it’s not the Nintendo Switch 2 (or as I hope it’s named, the Super Nintendo Switch). Nope, it’s an… alarm clock?

Indeed, you can own the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, which will rouse you with famous Nintendo video game sounds. It’s quite adorable, yet I’m uncertain if its $90 price is justified… unless the Link’s Awakening tune or the guardian’s high-pitched piano melody manages to jolt you from sleep.

Keep in mind, the application may not function correctly if you’re in a relationship, as it will also monitor the location of your partner alongside yours.

Furthermore, I must clarify that we’re just as clueless about the nature of the upcoming Switch test later this month, given that participants are required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Consequently, we likely won’t find out until its official release.

Halo is moving to Unreal Engine 5

It turns out, there’s more to the story. At the conclusion of the Halo World Championships in 2024, 343 Industries revealed that they have multiple new Halo projects under development. Instead of using the Slipstream Engine, as was the case with Halo Infinite, they will be switching to Unreal Engine 5 for these upcoming projects.

343 Industries has decided to change its name to Halo Studios, which we can only hope will lead to even greater achievements and improvements for the entire franchise!

New releases this week

The “Silent Hill 2 Remake” is exceptional, and if it manages to attract new players into the series who may not have wanted to play a game from 2001, that’s fantastic! If you’d like to learn more before making your decision, you could always take a look at Gameranx’s Before You Buy.

Not only has the remake of the game received numerous positive reviews from gamers, but it seems some have gone so far as to manipulate the game’s Wikipedia page with favorable reviews. As a result, Wikipedia temporarily restricted further edits to maintain the integrity and fairness of the information presented. Let’s all appreciate things for what they are!

This week, another critically acclaimed game that’s worth mentioning is “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” the latest JRPG from the creators of “Persona 5.” Given its origins, you can expect it to be great, but if you’re a fan of the “Persona” series, you’ll find it truly exceptional. It’s encouraging to see SEGA doing well with their games nowadays. Gameranx also prepared a Before You Buy guide for this one.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft releases on Netflix

A couple of weeks back, we discussed it as the trailer was unveiled (not to mention our admiration for Hayley Atwell). Critical reception is rather average, but if you’re fond of the series, why not give it a try? We always enjoy observing how video game adaptations perform.

LittleBigPlanet 3 PS4 version leaving the PlayStation store

On a somewhat melancholic note, let me share some news. Sony has declared that the game, LittleBigPlanet 3, will no longer be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store starting from November 1st.

For quite some time now, the game has been experiencing server problems, largely due to hacking attempts. As such, this latest issue doesn’t come as a big surprise. Rest assured, even though the game may encounter temporary setbacks, if you’ve bought it or have it through your PS Plus subscription, you can continue enjoying it.
