Chicago Med showrunner teases Hannah's sobriety in season 10

As a dedicated fan of Chicago Med who has followed Hannah Asher’s journey since her troubled beginnings, I must admit that her struggles with addiction have always kept me on the edge of my seat. The showrunner’s recent comments about Hannah’s ongoing battle with substance abuse have only intensified my concern for the character.

Supporters of “Chicago Med” might be concerned about whether Hannah will maintain her sobriety, as the show’s creator shares insights into her struggles!

Ever since I became part of Chicago Med in Season 5, Hannah Asher (played by Jessy Schram) has truly shone on the series. Her backstory is heart-wrenching – her mother passed away during childbirth due to an untreated illness, which fueled Hannah’s determination to become a doctor herself.

What happened to Hannah in Chicago Med?

The demands of her work caused Hannah significant stress, leading her to seek solace in heroin. Her relationship with Will Halstead suffered as he disapproved of her drug use and, in a desperate attempt to get Hannah into rehab, he planted illegal substances in her vehicle. Despite these events, it took a nearly fatal overdose for Hannah to acknowledge the need for treatment, which seemed to mark the end of her character.

In the seventh season, Schram reappeared unexpectedly, having completed a two-year stint in rehab. She was reinstated at work and has managed to maintain her sobriety, though she occasionally faces temptation. This last season saw her embarking on a relationship with Mitch Ripley, played by Luke Mitchell.

Nevertheless, Season 10 has increased the stress on Hannah. When Mitch was wrongly accused of assaulting a patient who was actually suing the hospital, Hannah discovered that he was shielding a friend. Consequently, she decided to report the friend, which made Mitch upset.

In the most recent installment, Hannah was seen making efforts to assist a lady experiencing preterm labor. Regrettably, although the infant survived, the woman passed away. The episode concluded with Hannah visibly distraught by her emotions.

Could this trauma push Hannah back to her addictions?

Will Hannah fall back into addiction in Chicago Med?

According to Chicago Med’s showrunner Allen MacDonald, as stated in an interview with TVLine, it’s crucial to understand that once someone is an addict, they remain an addict for life. Though Hannah has been clean for a while, a single relapse can undo all the progress she’s made.

There’s that very common phrase that people know — ‘once you’re an addict, you’re always an addict and that will be something that will be addressed in the new season. Hannah had substance abuse issues in the past, and she is still struggling with those, mentally. That doesn’t necessarily mean she’s using, doesn’t necessarily mean she’s not. But it’s still an issue that she has to be constantly aware of when she’s managing the stress of her work and personal lives.

Clearly, being in close proximity to a hospital filled with numerous medications poses a significant temptation for Hannah. So far, she’s been able to resist this temptation, but she does allow herself the occasional drink. Yet, she is wise enough to know her limits. The stress from Mitch and the loss of a patient could potentially lead Hannah to turn to drugs as a means of coping once again.

Hannah has made every effort to move past her troubled history, aware of how it once came close to ruining her completely. It’s only natural to wish that her friends may offer support, spotting the warning signs and preventing her from making the same mistakes again. Nevertheless, Hannah’s battles with addiction will always loom, adding a sense of authenticity and gravity to her struggles on “Chicago Med”.

Chicago Med Season 10 airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC. It streams the following day on Peacock.
