As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed countless romances unfold on both the silver screen and within the virtual realm, I must admit that “We Live in Time” piqued my interest from the moment I heard about it. Having been captivated by Andrew Garfield’s performances in films like Spider-Man and Hacksaw Ridge, and Florence Pugh’s impressive portrayals in Little Women and Black Widow, I was eager to see these talented actors collaborate on a project that promised an honest take on love and life.
The film “We Live in Time” will hit select theaters on October 11, following its premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024. This romantic drama has received generally favorable critiques, earning impressive ratings on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
We Live in Time reviews praise Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh
Under the direction of John Crowley (known for The Goldfinch) and written by Nick Payne (The Last Letter from Your Lover), the film We Live in Time explores the connection between Tobias, a salesman, and Almut, a chef. Critic Jonathan Sim from ComingSoon praised the movie as “an authentic story that’s both absurd in a delightful way and boasts poignant, heartrending performances.
Glenn Whipp from the Los Angeles Times stated that “These two charming, confident actors are irresistible, making the first hour of ‘We Live in Time’ pass swiftly. It’s filled with adorable meet-ups, spirited disagreements, intense love scenes, melancholic moments, a humorous scene involving chocolate-covered biscuits on Alma’s pregnant belly in the bathtub, and an abundance of candles – an overwhelming number of candles.
Michael Rechtshaffen from The Hollywood Reporter noted that although the film “While We Live in Time” and its themes may not be as emotionally uplifting as Crowley’s Oscar-nominated movie “Brooklyn”, it still manages to deliver an incredibly honest perspective on mortality that feels remarkably life-affirming.
The response to the movie “We Live in Time” hasn’t been universally favorable. While Manohla Dargis of The New York Times commended the acting skills of Garfield and Pugh, she took issue with the film for portraying Almut as another stereotypical suffering woman who radiates beatific serenity.
We Live in Time Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores revealed
Currently, as I compose this, the movie “We Live in Time” is receiving an impressive 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes following 65 reviews. On Metacritic, after 21 reviews, it scores 61 out of 100, indicating a largely positive reception. Notably, Metacritic assigns ratings to films and TV shows using a weighted average. As of now, it’s uncertain how the general public will react to “We Live in Time”. If its initial screenings in select cinemas prove successful, there’s a possibility that it could be eligible for a broader release.
