The Menendez Brothers and the 4 best documentaries on Netflix in October 2024

As a true crime enthusiast with over two decades of immersion into the darker corners of human behavior, I must say that Netflix never fails to deliver captivating documentaries that leave me on the edge of my seat. The recent releases are no exception!

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but sing praises about Netflix and its knack for creating exceptional documentaries that span an impressive range of subjects, with a particular focus on captivating true crime stories that have left audiences spellbound.

On October 7th, Netflix introduced a new true crime documentary series titled “The Menendez Brothers“. This series revolves around Lyle and Erik Menendez, whose story was previously explored in the second season of Netflix’s Monster series, specifically in the episode “Monsters: The Story of the Menendez Brothers“. The series produced by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan debuted on Netflix on September 19th.

We shared the list of the best true crime documentaries worth watching on Netflix this month.

The Menendez Brothers

More recently, the TV show titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has resurfaced the brothers in news headlines. Contrary to this drama series, which is based on events from nearly 30 years ago, “The Menendez Brothers” is a two-hour long documentary instead.

The movie features conversations with Erik and Lyle Menendez, conducted from prison. These siblings were found guilty for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty, in their Beverly Hills residence back in 1989. Director Alejandro Hartmann employed a wealth of resources spanning several decades to portray both the crime itself and the ensuing trial. This documentary offers a distinctive viewpoint as the brothers share their narrative using their own voices.

As of its release, “The Menendez Brothers” ranks second on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies chart, with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” holding the top spot.

Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter

“Into the Flames: The Unfound Daughter

On September 12, the film “Into The Fire: The Lost Daughter” made its debut on Netflix. This production is overseen by Charlize Theron and helmed by director Ryan White.

Jailbreak: Love on the Run

A fresh true crime documentary you might enjoy is titled “Jailbreak: Love on the Run“. It debuted on Netflix on September 25th, so this is a relatively recent production that I recommend checking out.

The film chronicles the tale of Casey White, a felon incarcerated in an Alabama prison, who develops a romantic relationship with Vicky White, a respected correctional officer – despite sharing no familial bond. In cahoots, they devise a scheme to free the convict, aiming to start a fresh chapter together.

The narrative titled “Love on the Run: A Jailbreak Tale” chronicles a series of events that unfolded, leading to a secret romance and ultimately, an escape from Lauderdale County Jail. This daring escape triggered a 11-day nationwide manhunt.

American Murder: Laci Peterson

Laci Peterson” tells a story about the high-profile murder of Laci Peterson that captivated news outlets and newspaper front pages from 2002 onwards.

Living in Modesto, California, Laci Petersen went missing when she was eight months along with her first baby. For several months, efforts to locate Laci were made but it wasn’t until her body was found in the San Francisco Bay that progress was made. Her husband, Scott Peterson, was subsequently charged and later convicted for the crime.

Over two decades since the trial that saw Scott convicted for her murder, a fresh documentary delves extensively into this intriguing case, incorporating insights from individuals who played key roles in the investigation. Notably, it includes exclusive, first-time interviews with Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha.

The documentary series premiered on Netflix on Aug. 14.

I Am a Killer

Starting October 16th, the true crime series originally from Netflix, titled “Confessional: A Serial Killer’s Tale,” will debut its latest season. To date, we’ve seen a total of four seasons unfold in this gripping show.

The fifth season of “I Am a Killer” showcases introspective conversations with condemned prisoners, delving into the facts of their criminal acts. This gripping documentary series ventures into America’s maximum-security prisons, speaking to six inmates each season, offering viewers an inside look at the motivations behind the crimes they perpetrated. The program has been commissioned for a sixth season as well.
