NCIS showrunner talks problems with bringing McGee and Delilah's twins back in

As a dedicated fan of NCIS who has followed the show since its early seasons, I must say it’s high time McGee’s twins made their on-screen debut! It feels like they’ve been ghosting us as much as Tim seems to be ghosted by his own kids.

NCIS fans may finally get to see McGee’s twins on screen, although they may look a lot different!

Among NCIS fans, it’s become a recurring jest that Tim McGee (Sean Murray) and his wife Delilah’s (Margo Harshman) twin babies are seldom seen on the show. The couple has had a strong marriage, with Tim standing by Delilah after a terrorist explosion in Season 11 left her wheelchair-bound. They tied the knot in Season 14, and it was confirmed the following season that Delilah was pregnant with twins.

In the episode “Ready or Not” from Season 15 of NCIS, Delilah found herself going into labor with Tim by her side. Naturally, things didn’t go smoothly on this show, as a fugitive took hostages at the hospital. This put Tim in a difficult position where he had to apprehend the suspect while ensuring the safety of his wife.

Looking back, everything worked out splendidly as Delilah delivered a son named John (after dear old Dad) and a daughter, Morgan. Yet, on-screen, they’ve only made brief appearances. Tim frequently discusses his fatherhood journey, and a recurring comedic thread involves him being preoccupied by the kids’ mischief. There was even an episode where he connected with another dad from their school, causing quite a stir among the other dads who didn’t view him as “cool.

The twins aren’t appearing on-screen, and some fans are making light of their scarcity with jokes. However, it turns out that there is a valid explanation for this.

Where are McGee’s kids in NCIS?

According to Steven D. Binder’s chat with TVLine, plans to introduce the twins on screen were consistently postponed without a compelling rationale. The actual cause behind their absence turned out to be the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to strict filming guidelines, it proved challenging to accommodate young children on set.

Although it’s grown dim, the problem persists as if the children were currently around seven years old. Therefore, we might witness different performers.

Even when we brought Jimmy Palmer’s daughter on [in February 2022], we had to magically age her a little bit. Now she’s older than McGee’s kids, so do we age McGee’s kids?

In order to account for the time elapsed between different seasons, NCIS occasionally skips several months ahead, which means it makes sense that the children are now attending elementary school. As teased by Binder, there are plans for a Christmas special, so perhaps we’ll catch a glimpse of the twins during a large family gathering while Tim searches for the perfect gifts for them.

Fans of NCIS now have a theory as to why the twins have been absent, and we eagerly await their return to the show.

NCIS Season 22 premieres Monday October 14 at 8/7c on CBS.
