After spending a delightful afternoon with the charming duo of Mario and Luigi in their latest adventure, Brothership, I must say it has been a nostalgic journey down memory lane! As a long-time fan who grew up playing these games, the return to the world of Concordia after nearly a decade felt like reuniting with old friends.
The first original installment in the series in almost a decade is Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which also marks the debut of a Mario & Luigi game specifically designed for home consoles. As its release date nears, I had an opportunity to play Brothership, becoming familiar with fresh gameplay elements and uncovering more details about the storyline.
The great reunification
The adventure of Mario and Luigi commences following the devastation of the Uni-Tree, a colossal world tree that interconnected all the islands in Concordia. As brothers, they embark on a mission to restore the world’s connections, which involves addressing the issues faced by each island’s inhabitants. Players can chart a course for their ship, Shipshape Island, using the map. Upon an island appearing in sight, Mario and Luigi can blast off towards it via cannon.
On Shipshape Island, progress is made as players complete quests and link up various islands. Since the game has a semi-linear structure, players can traverse islands in diverse sequences, uncovering new characters and activities on Shipshape Island throughout their journey.
During my initial exploration, I visited the vibrant Twistee Isle, an early inhabitant of Brothership. This island harbors a settlement of skilled dancers as its residents. My mission was to retrieve a missing hair pomade belonging to a character, which would enable them to dance and thus reestablish our connection with the lively Twistee Isle.
A hop and a bonk
In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the classic hybrid combat system makes a comeback. The characters take turns in a strategy-based setup, requiring precise timing for executing powerful attacks, boosting damage output, or dodging enemy strikes. Initially, my repertoire consisted mainly of hammer and jump attacks; however, as I progressed deeper into the game, my move set expanded significantly.
Mario and Luigi possess unique joint abilities known as Bros. Moves, capable of causing significant harm to adversaries. These maneuvers are more challenging because they necessitate a swift sequence of accurately timed button presses. Furthermore, there are Plugs available, which grant benefits to both characters during combat. For instance, the Anti-Spike Specialist Plug made all my hammer strikes against spiky enemies instant critical hits. The Auto-Mushroom Plug caused me to instantly use a Mushroom to heal either Mario or Luigi when their health fell below a specific level.
Different kinds of foes also boast exclusive statistics and resistances. For instance, spiky adversaries won’t be affected by jump assaults, whereas airborne foes will evade thrown hammers. To conquer these special enemies effectively, gamers must plan their strategies wisely.
Beyond battle scenarios, there are other challenges as well, such as puzzles and mini-games. One of these tasks required guiding a character through a forest. She was deathly afraid of insects, so I needed to tread carefully, ensuring to steer clear of them while trying to lead her out. Mario and Luigi would toss her back and forth, making it difficult for me to navigate the insect-infested area. Coming too near one meant I had to restart the task.
Use your Luigi Logic
In my journey, the second island I explored was Merrygo Island, which is situated deeper within the game and boasts a festive motif. To find the character that the brothers were looking for, I had to maneuver through a vast labyrinth. By scaling towers, I gained an expansive view of the maze, then activated a button to twist the walls and create new passageways.
This introduced a new function called Luigi Logic. By tapping a button, the green-clad Mario brother can be guided to engage with the surroundings when instructed. Tasks like breaking boxes, gathering treasures, and accomplishing objectives fall under this category. In the scenario we’re discussing, Luigi activated the button to alter the maze setup, while Mario gave instructions from a tower. This feature is intended to streamline exploration and uncovering hidden elements.
Brotherly love
Here’s what I learned during my adventure with Mario and Luigi: Brothership. It was often referred to as an extensive game, which aligns well with the numerous islands that can be explored.
