Vettaiyan Movie Review: Rajinikanth balances between emotion and action in this investigative drama making the entire show his own

As a dedicated follower of Tamil cinema with over three decades of movie-watching experience under my belt, I must say that Vettaiyan is a thrilling addition to Rajinikanth’s illustrious filmography. The film offers an engaging investigative tale that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats while also delving into the emotional life of a police officer played by our beloved superstar.

On October 10, 2024, the much-awaited film “Vettaiyan,” starring the legendary Rajinikanth, will be gracing theater screens. This movie offers an engaging narrative centering around a captivating investigation. In this production, Rajinikanth portrays the role of a police officer who is renowned for his expertise in encounters.

Apart from the lead actor, this film boasts a talented group of performers such as Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Rithika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, and several others in significant parts. The Plot:

As a devoted admirer, let me share my take on the captivating tale portrayed in the movie “Vettaiyan,” starring the legendary Rajinikanth. This narrative follows the life of SP Athiyan IPS, a courageous police officer who resides in Kanniyakumari with his wife and nephew. Known for his exceptional skills in dealing with criminals, he is widely recognized as an encounter specialist, striking fear into the hearts of many lawbreakers. This revered figure has earned himself the moniker, Vettaiyan – The Hunter.

Throughout his career, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer crosses paths with a woman named Saranya, who is a dedicated school teacher and tirelessly champions her students’ rights as well as the cause of education. Simultaneously, Amitabh Bachchan assumes the part of a Supreme Court attorney, focusing on human rights and vehemently arguing that not every criminal act should result in an encounter (a violent confrontation between law enforcement officers and criminals).

Yet, events unexpectedly grow grim, leading Athiyan to take personal action. He even relocates to Chennai, creating an intriguing investigative drama and a clash of beliefs as he confronts criminals versus upholding human rights.

The Good:

In simpler terms, the movie “Vettaiyan” is essentially all about Rajinikanth, with just the right storyline to keep viewers engaged. Not only that, Fahadh Faasil adds to our enjoyment with his humor and charisma, showcasing yet another aspect of his acting talent. This film not only leads us on an intriguing detective quest where we ponder who committed the crime and how they’ll be caught, but it also gives a peek into the emotional world of a police officer dealing with this case.

In a compelling and authentic flow, the initial part of the movie unfolds the narrative, making it an invigorating experience in the cinemas. Not only did the film maintain its focus on essential aspects, but it also skillfully inserted some dramatic moments that catered to the superstar’s adoring audience, showcasing elements they would appreciate.

In the first half of the screenplay, the world and characters were skillfully introduced and developed, creating a comfortable atmosphere for viewers to dive into the story. Notably, TJ Gnanavel has shown great talent in weaving together a rich, thought-provoking tale that addresses real-life issues in a way that appeals to a wide audience.

On a technical note, once more, Anirudh Ravochander and his musical talent form the sturdy foundation of this movie. Despite some tunes and background scores appearing to be reminiscent of his previous work, they continue to leave a lasting impression on the film, carrying its emotions forward.

As a lifestyle expert, I must say that the visual artistry displayed by SR Kathir is nothing short of praiseworthy. However, what truly captured my attention was the ingenious application of AI technology to mimic Amitabh Bachchan’s voice in Tamil. The result? A seamless blend that left me quite impressed! Not only did this innovation pique my interest, but the action-packed stunts in the film were nothing short of compelling and engaging.

The Bad:

Although Vettaiyan maintains its narrative thread throughout and the performances by the main cast are commendable, there are several issues that arise at different points. It’s puzzling as to why a cinematic titan like Amitabh Bachchan was given a lackluster role in this production.

Moving forward, the movie struggles to maintain the pace set in its storytelling during the second act, often falling flat in various scenes. The dialogue seems contrived and reminiscent of daytime soap operas, creating a disconnect between the audience and the characters. This is particularly noticeable in the portrayal of a character’s death, which feels sudden and rushed, appearing to be a quick solution rather than a meaningful plot development.

The sudden change in the pace of the movie and the heavy-handed dialogue hint at a tendency towards moralizing their message. Unfortunately, Manju Warrier’s character as the superstar’s wife seemed underdeveloped and outdated, with minimal interaction between the two actors on screen, apart from an introductory song. Additionally, the inclusion of the song appeared to follow a typical recipe for creating commercially successful films within Tamil cinema.

In recent movies, there’s a recurring trope where anything shared online instantly becomes viral. This film unfortunately continues this outdated portrayal of the internet and social media, which weakens the overall writing and the potential impact of the content presented.

The Performance:

In this film, Rajinikanth undeniably outshone everyone else with his grandeur style and charisma. As an actor, he breathes life into larger-than-life characters that no one dares to challenge. This drama movie is certain to have fans rooting for him, applauding his witty dialogue delivery.

In contrast to many star-focused movies where he usually carries the bulk of the work on his own, this time the superstar wasn’t solo; Fahadh Faasil was by his side. True to form, the actor perfectly portrayed aspects of humor, charm, and playful flirtation, doing so effortlessly without appearing contrived.

Despite the other characters being poorly developed with minimal depth, Dushara Vijayan delivered an outstanding performance in her part, demonstrating her promising potential as a lasting talent in the industry.

The Verdict:

The film “Vettaiyan” is an investigative action-drama presented with a narration reminiscent of Rajinikanth’s style. It delivers a powerful message and adds a fresh perspective to storytelling.

Regardless of obstacles encountered during its second part, this film provides an experience worthwhile for both fans and cinema enthusiasts, making a trip to the theater highly recommended.
