CS2: Massive ban wave following XP-farming exploits

As a long-time gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Valve’s recent actions have left me both impressed and slightly amused. The CS2 update brought about some questionable tactics from players, but Valve’s response was firm and decisive.

A week past, Valve introduced the largest update for CS2 to date. This update unfortunately encouraged some players to employ less-than-ideal XP farming tactics for in-game rewards in CS2, which Valve has since penalized those discovered utilizing them.

What kind of bans did Valve hand out?

The players who utilized such exploits were given a ban lasting one year, but they are still able to participate in the game, purchase in-game items, and open cases.

But they will not be able to either trade their items or acquire other items.

Many of the victims are understandably mad at Valve for this reaction:

It seems that Valve unintentionally left a vulnerability in their game, which some players have taken advantage of. However, when these players are found to be doing so, Valve takes action by imposing bans on them.

Others were confused, as to why no VAC-/permanent-bans were handed out:

A significant number of prominent content producers were involved in the XP exploit, leading to a one-year trading ban for them. Those who employed this technique to accumulate medals received a VAC Ban instead.

xMercy then summed it up perfectly on Twitter/X:

As someone who closely follows CS2 Armory news, I’m not surprised to hear about the trading cooldowns being imposed on those who misused the XP farming glitch. After all, the game’s moderators have shown in the past that they don’t tolerate exploitation of bugs or cheats. It’s a bummer, but I guess this serves as a reminder to play fair and within the rules.

In this particular topic, it’s advantageous for Valve to maintain a firm stance. They ought to establish a pattern of intolerance towards general exploitation, and that’s exactly what they did.

Additionally, their decision not to procrastinate or act casually, as exemplified by not penalizing content creators, demonstrates that they are serious and committed in their actions.

1 Year Ban

Arrow, for example, a big CS content creator from the US, is among those who got banned.

A positive indication for those within the community who prioritize fair play, offering hope and reassurance.

Is it your opinion that Valve’s response was excessively severe, or do you believe it was a just penalty for those who abused the game in this manner?
