Lewis Pullman Wants to Replace Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Haynes’ Romance Movie

As a devoted fan of both Lewis Pullman and Todd Haynes’ work, I must say that this news has me absolutely thrilled! Having watched Pullman’s impressive performances in films like Top Gun: Maverick and Salem’s Lot, I can confidently say he possesses the talent and charisma to deliver a captivating portrayal in Haynes’ upcoming romance movie.

Lewis Pullman says he’d be open to replacing Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Haynes’ new romance movie.

Previously, Phoenix was paired with Danny Ramirez in a romantic film set in the 1930s and directed by Haynes. The story revolves around two men engaged in a sexually charged relationship as they leave Los Angeles, steering clear of conventional love norms.

It’s said that Phoenix departed from the film set about five days prior to the scheduled start of production. As of now, his role hasn’t been filled by another actor, and the project seems to be temporarily halted.

What did Lewis Pullman say about Todd Haynes’ movie?

On the Just for Variety podcast, I shared that if given the chance, I’d leap at the prospect of stepping into Phoenix’s shoes for the upcoming film.

Pullman expressed his enthusiasm, saying, ‘I’d be thrilled to receive that call.’ He considers the concept remarkable and is currently available and prepared.

In the upcoming year, Pullman, who played a role in the latest adaptation of Salem’s Lot, is set to make his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through the Thunderbolts film. Similarly, Ramirez, who portrayed Joaquin Torres/Falcon in earlier MCU projects, will reprise this role in Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release in 2025. At the moment of this article’s publication, Variety has reported that Ramirez is also cast in Thunderbolts, which is slated to hit theaters next May.

At the 2024 Venice Film Festival last month, while discussing Folie á Deux, I (Phoenix) was asked about my decision to step away from Haynes’ movie.

Phoenix explained to reporters that since he was merely expressing his personal viewpoint in the current context where other artists are absent, it wouldn’t add any value. Consequently, he decided not to share anything about the situation.

Christine Vachon, one of the producers on Haynes’ film, expressed her sentiments about Phoenix’s unexpected exit to The Hollywood Reporter in these words: “To me, it’s a great tragedy that his time wasn’t valued and that our collective effort over the years with Joaquin didn’t result in another Todd Haynes movie. Instead of a film, we missed an opportunity as a cultural community.” She finds this situation deeply regrettable and can’t seem to move past it. Essentially, she believes that losing another potential Todd Haynes movie is nothing short of criminal.
