Christopher Nolan Reportedly Vetoed Original Ending of Joker

As a die-hard fan of both the Dark Knight trilogy and Joker, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and disappointment upon learning about the vetoed ending of Joker: Folie à Deux. The idea of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck carving his face, reminiscent of Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal, sounds both thrilling and unsettling – a perfect blend for the Joker’s character.

One of the Joker’s intended conclusions was not realized, as it’s said that Christopher Nolan intervened to disallow it.

Why Did Christopher Nolan Veto the Ending of Joker?

As per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, an alternate ending for the movie ‘Joker’ had Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck, self-mutilating to create a permanent smile in public view, supported by a crowd. However, director Christopher Nolan rejected this concept, preferring to preserve the image of his Joker, portrayed by Heath Ledger in ‘The Dark Knight’, as the one who would inflict such a mark upon himself.

In “Folie à Deux,” directed by Phillips, there’s a scene where another character carves into Joker’s face. Towards the end of the movie, it’s revealed that the person who attacks Arthur is the one seen in the background, furtively carving into his own face and cackling maniacally.

Nolan moved from Warner Bros. to Universal Pictures in order to distribute Oppenheimer. This implies that the Academy Award winner was no longer available to intervene in the project’s development. In addition, the success of Joker allowed Phillips to obtain an unprecedented degree of creative control and final say over Folie à Deux.

Due to disappointing feedback and low ratings from viewers, the movie Joker: Folie à Deux is facing difficulties at the ticket sales. Surprisingly, for a film with a budget of $200 million, Joker 2 fell far short during its debut weekend, earning only $37.7 million domestically. In contrast, Joker opened to a record-breaking October box office of $96.2 million back in 2019.

In the story ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’, Arthur Fleck is confined at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his actions as the Joker. During this time, he grapples with his two personas and unexpectedly discovers genuine affection. Additionally, he uncovers a hidden talent for music that has long resided within him.

In addition to Phoenix, the movie Joker: Folie À Deux features Lady Gaga playing Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, Brendan Gleeson as Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener as Maryanne Stewart, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Steve Coogan as Paddy Meyers, and Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent.

Joker: Folie À Deux is now in theaters.
