As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless storylines across various genres, I must say that the departure of Kurt Sutter from Netflix’s The Abandons feels like hitting a roadblock in an RPG when you’re just about to reach the final boss. The creative differences and production hiccups are reminiscent of the infamous glitches that can derail even the most epic questlines.
The mastermind behind the creation, executive producer, and head of the creative team for the Netflix Western series The Abandons, Kurt Sutter, has departed from the project just weeks before filming wraps up. This marks his second departure from a series, following his termination from the Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans M.C., in 2019.
Kurt Sutter reportedly departs Netflix’s The Abandons due to creative differences
Kurt Sutter has exited the upcoming series The Abandons reportedly due to creative differences.
The filming is presently underway in Calgary, Alberta, and will conclude in three weeks, as reported by Deadline. Since there’s no showrunner, Otto Bathurst, the executive producer/director, and Rob Askins, co-executive producer, will oversee production to make sure everything, including any necessary reshooting, proceeds smoothly.
Neither Netflix nor Sutter’s representatives have commented on the issue as of now. As per Deadline, Sutter left due to creative disputes between him and Netflix about the show’s direction. The streaming giant had issues with the lengthy 1 hour and 40 minutes runtime of the series premiere. It was said that trimming down the episode into a shorter version wasn’t feasible, which led to the choice of splitting it into two parts. This move brought about its own complications. A cliffhanger scene had to be included at the end of the first episode, necessitating extra filming for additional scenes to wrap up Episode 1 and kick off Episode 2.
According to reports, the scripts for extra scenes have been prepared, but as of now, those scenes haven’t been shot yet.
During his dismissal from Mayans M.C., allegations of a hostile work environment were made by writers, actors, crew members, and producers. However, this time no such claim has been made. According to Deadline, the series exceeded its budget during a period when networks like Netflix are aiming to reduce overall spending. Initially, the show was meant to have 10 episodes, but it was eventually shortened to eight and then seven episodes. With the separation of the series premiere, it seems that the number of episodes will again be eight.
The series stars Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey, along with others. It chronicles various families as they strive to achieve their ‘Manifest Destiny’ in the 1850s Oregon territory.
